Error 0xC004F213 means Windows cannot find a product key or digital license for this device; activation requires an existing valid license or purchasing a genuine one—there is no legitimate free activation key.^1^
1. Check whether you already own a license
A Windows 10 license may be either a 25-character product key or a digital license that activates without entering a key.
Look for an existing key in:
- The confirmation email from Microsoft or an authorized retailer.
- The card or label inside the Windows package.
- The Certificate of Authenticity attached to the PC.
- Your Microsoft account order history, if purchased from Microsoft.
- The PC manufacturer’s records, if Windows came preinstalled.
A free upgrade to Windows 10 normally uses a digital license rather than a product key.^2^
If you find a valid key:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character key.
- Confirm that the installed edition—Home or Pro—matches the edition covered by the license.
2. Restore an existing digital license
If this PC was activated previously:
- Connect it to the internet.
- Sign in using the Microsoft account previously associated with its digital license.
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
The Troubleshoot option appears only when Windows 10 version 1607 or later is not activated.^3^
If the motherboard or other significant hardware was changed:
- In the troubleshooter, select I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the original license.
- Select the relevant computer.
- Check This is the device I’m using right now.
- Select Activate.
A preinstalled license might not transfer after a motherboard replacement, in which case a new license may be required.^4^
3. If Enterprise was installed but your license is for Pro
First check the installed edition under Settings > System > About > Windows specifications, or press Windows key + R, enter winver, and select OK.
Only if it shows Windows 10 Enterprise and the license you already own is for Windows 10 Pro, use this edition-switch procedure:
- Disconnect the PC completely from the internet.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the generic Pro edition-switch key:
VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T - Select Activate Product.
- Restart the computer—do not merely shut it down.
- Reconnect to the internet and allow your existing valid Pro license to activate.
This generic key changes the installed edition; it does not provide or replace a Windows license.^5^
4. If the copy is genuinely unlicensed or counterfeit
A counterfeit copy cannot be made genuine with a public or generic key. If Windows came with a used PC, request the original license from the seller. Otherwise, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Go to Microsoft Store and purchase a digital license. Each additional PC requires its own license.^6^
