This is a follow-up to an existing locked Microsoft Q&A discussion. I independently reproduced the problem and confirmed a workaround that survives a Windows restart. Confirmed workaround for recurring "OneDrive on SPO" folder error — November 2026

I encountered the same recurring error on Windows 11 with OneDrive version 26.195.1006.0007.

My personal OneDrive synchronisation folder is located at C:\OneDrive and contains approximately 34,000 files (66.7 GB).

OneDrive repeatedly reported:

"We couldn't find your 'OneDrive on SPO' folder in C:\OneDrive"

The folder existed and was accessible, and my files were intact. Resetting OneDrive and reinstalling/updating the software did not resolve the problem permanently.

The successful workaround was:

Disable Microsoft OneDrive in Task Manager → Startup apps.

Open the Windows Startup folder using shell:startup.

Create a shortcut pointing to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe".

In the shortcut's Properties, set Start in to C:\.

Leave the shortcut target without the /background parameter.

OneDrive then completed synchronisation of approximately 34,000 files and reported "Backed up and synced".

Most importantly, after restarting Windows, OneDrive started automatically, recognised the existing folder and continued working without the error.

This confirms that changing the startup method can resolve the problem without moving the synchronisation folder, deleting files or reinstalling OneDrive.

The exact cause remains unconfirmed. Because the working directory and startup parameters were both changed, I cannot establish which adjustment was responsible.

I hope Microsoft can investigate why the standard OneDrive automatic startup fails to recognise an existing synchronisation folder while this alternative launch method succeeds.

    Hi emaharg,

Thank you for documenting the workaround and the exact OneDrive version, folder location, and startup configuration. This information may be useful to others who encounter the same recurring “OneDrive on SPO” folder error.

It is also important to note that this appears to be a workaround rather than a confirmed product fix. Because both the working directory and the startup parameters were changed at the same time, the results do not yet establish which change allowed OneDrive to recognize the existing synchronization folder.

If possible, please submit these findings through Send OneDrive Feedback, including the OneDrive version, the exact error message, and the difference between the standard and alternative startup methods. This gives the OneDrive team the diagnostic context needed to investigate the startup behavior.

For anyone trying this workaround, it would also be sensible to back up important data first and avoid deleting or relocating the existing synchronization folder. Thank you so much for your understanding.
