Reset the legacy Windows default theme, which is separate from the Windows 11 light/dark and accessibility settings you already changed and directly matches the mixed black/white, unreadable UI shown in your screenshots.^1^
1. Reset the legacy theme
- Press Windows key + R.
- Paste this command into Run:
shell:::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921}
- Press Enter.
- Under Windows Default Themes, select Windows or Windows (light).
- Restart the computer.
- Reopen Control Panel → Programs and Features and check whether the program names are visible again.
This is a different reset path from changing Settings → Personalization → Colors, so it remains applicable despite your earlier light-mode and theme tests.
2. Correct Word’s page separately
If Windows dialog text is fixed but Word still shows a black page:
- Open Word.
- Select View → Switch Modes to change the document canvas back to white.
- To keep it white permanently, open:
File → Options → General → Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office.
- Enable Never change the document page color, then select OK.^2^
This affects the displayed page rather than the document’s printed color.
3. Repair Windows components if the legacy reset fails
Open Command Prompt as administrator, then run these commands in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish; do not close the window before SFC reaches 100%. DISM repairs the Windows component image, and SFC scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies.^3^
Restart Windows afterward and test both Control Panel and Word again.
4. Last fallback
If the colors remain corrupted throughout Windows, use:
Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while retaining files, settings, and installed applications.^4^
Back up important files first even though this repair option is designed to preserve them.
