Microphone feature not working on copilot web or app

I get the attached error, even though co-pilot has access to the mic through windows and through the web.

The voice note feature however does work fine, and the mic is working outside of co-pilot. Can this be fixed? I've already repaired, reset and re-installed. Is this a bug within co-pilot?

    Hi Robert,

Since the microphone works in other applications and the voice note feature can still detect it, this does not appear to be a general microphone hardware or Windows permission issue.

For the web version, please try opening Copilot in an InPrivate or Incognito window. If the microphone works there, the problem is likely related to cached site data, an extension, or the current browser profile. In that case, clear the cookies and site data specifically for the Copilot website, temporarily disable browser extensions, and then sign in again.

It would also be worth checking the browser’s input-device settings to confirm that the correct microphone is selected, especially if more than one audio device is connected.

Because the same behavior occurs in both the web experience and the app, even after Repair, Reset, and reinstallation, an account, organizational policy, or service-side issue is also possible. However, the error message alone is not enough to confirm that this is a Copilot bug.

If the issue continues in a private browser window or on another device using the same account, please submit feedback from Copilot and include the screenshot, the affected Copilot URL, browser or app version, account type, and the approximate time the error occurred. These details can help the product team investigate the issue more effectively. Thank you so much for your understanding.

The error shown is consistent with a browser or app microphone permission block, even if Windows microphone access is already enabled.

    Try this end-to-end:

    1. In Windows, confirm microphone access is enabled:
      • Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
      • Turn on Microphone access
      • Turn on Let apps access your microphone
      • Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone
    2. If using Copilot in a browser, re-allow microphone access for the site:
      • In Microsoft Edge:
        • Select the lock icon in the address bar and set Microphone to Allow; or
        • Select the microphone icon in the address bar and choose Always Allow microphone access for the site; or
        • Go to edge://settings/content/microphone and make sure the Microsoft 365/Office site is listed under Allow.
      • In Chrome:
        • Select the lock icon in the address bar and set Microphone to Allow.
    3. If the site was previously denied microphone access, remove it from the blocked list and refresh:
      • In Edge: Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Microphone
        • Under Customised behaviours, delete the blocked site entry
        • Return to the Copilot tab, refresh, and select Allow when prompted
      • In Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone
        • Under Customised behaviours, delete the blocked site entry
        • Return to the Copilot tab, refresh, and select Allow while visiting the site
    4. If using Copilot on the web inside Teams, also check app-level permissions:
      • In Teams, open the app’s More options > App permissions
      • Turn on microphone access
      • Refresh the app
    5. Since repair, reset, and reinstall were already tried, use the remaining supported checks:
      • Restart Edge or Chrome
      • Restart the PC
      • Try the web experience in the other recommended browser (Edge or Chrome)

Based on the supported guidance, this is usually a permissions issue rather than a microphone hardware failure, especially since the microphone works in other apps and voice note works.
