Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Associate and Expert credentials earned through Certiport are not renewed through Microsoft Learn’s free annual renewal assessment; keep them managed in your Certiport Test Candidate account, and check Certiport’s MOS policy when your five-year expiration approaches.
What applies to your certifications
The Microsoft Office Specialist: Associate and Expert credentials for Microsoft 365 Apps are part of the MOS/Certiport program, despite “Associate” and “Expert” appearing in their names. The Expert credential is the highest credential in that program and requires the MOS Associate credential plus two qualifying Expert exams under the documented combination rules.^1^
They therefore differ from Microsoft’s role-based Associate and Expert certifications:
- MOS and MCE: Microsoft’s current policy lists these as expiring every five years.
- Role-based and specialty certifications: Valid for one year and eligible for Microsoft Learn renewal assessments.^2^
The free assessment available during the six months before expiration is expressly described for role-based certifications, not MOS credentials.^3^
How MOS renewal currently works
The available public guidance establishes the five-year expiration period but does not provide an explicit MOS renewal workflow—such as a renewal assessment, renewal button, or definitive instruction that retaking one particular exam extends the existing Associate or Expert credential.
Consequently:
- Do not expect a Microsoft Learn renewal assessment for these MOS credentials.
- Record the certification’s issue and expiration dates in your Certiport account.
- As the expiration date approaches, check Certiport’s certification-expiration policy for the renewal requirements then in effect.^4^
- If the policy still does not display a renewal action, contact Certiport Credentials Support through the support options in your Certiport account.
MOS policy does permit someone who passed an Office exam to take it again, but that retake rule alone does not establish that retaking an exam renews the composite Associate or Expert credential.^5^
There is also a date-related exception reported in Microsoft Q&A: MOS credentials earned before September 2, 2025 remain valid indefinitely, while credentials issued on or after that date are valid for five years.^6^ Check the issue date printed in your Certiport record before planning for renewal.
Transferring or linking the credentials
There is currently no documented manual process for transferring a Certiport MOS credential into a Microsoft Learn profile. Microsoft says integration is being improved; until it is complete, Certiport-earned credentials should be managed from the Certiport Test Candidate account. There you can:
- Sign in to your Certiport Test Candidate account.
- Open your certifications or transcript area.
- View, download, or share the certificates.
- Download and retain a copy of the Certiport transcript.
Microsoft recognizes Certiport credentials shown there as official even when they do not appear in the Learn profile.^7^
Use a personal, long-term email address for the Certiport account where possible, and retain downloaded copies of the Associate and Expert certificates and transcript. Changing the email to match a Learn account is not documented as a reliable way to force linking.
