If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

(Note, even if your device does not show on the Microsoft account, the Bitlocker Recovery Key may still be available on this link)

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number used to unlock an encrypted drive when Windows can’t unlock it automatically.

If no recovery key was manually set up, it may still have been automatically backed up when BitLocker or Device Encryption was enabled. Check these locations:

    1. Microsoft account
From another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey, sign in, and look for a key whose Key ID matches the first 8 digits shown on the BitLocker recovery screen.
    2. Work or school account
If the device was ever signed in to an organization, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey, sign in, open Devices, expand the device, and select View BitLocker Keys.
    3. Printed copy
Check any paperwork saved when BitLocker was activated.
    4. USB flash drive
If the key was saved to USB, connect it to the locked device or read the text file from another device.
    5. Another person’s account
If someone else set up the device or turned on BitLocker, the key might be stored in that person’s Microsoft account.

    Important facts:

    • Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.
    • If the device is managed by an organization, the IT department may have the key.
    • If the key cannot be found, the remaining option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options. This removes all files.
