Install the current Microsoft Copilot app from Microsoft’s official direct listing or standalone installer instead of retrying the failing in-app Store redirect.
Install the current Copilot app
The message in the screenshot confirms that the installed Windows Copilot version is retired. A matching Windows 11 case was resolved by using this alternative official listing:
- Open Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft Apps.
- Select Install.
- When installation finishes, open Copilot and sign in with the Microsoft account you normally use.
- Select Chat. ^1^
If that listing still invokes Microsoft Store and fails, bypass the Store:
- Download Microsoft’s standalone Copilot installer.
- Open File Explorer → Downloads.
- Double-click the downloaded
.exe and approve the Windows security prompt.
- Wait for installation to finish, then open Start, search for Microsoft Copilot, and launch it.
Microsoft documents this as the supported single-user installation method. A CDN-based installer is also supported where Store access is disabled. ^2^
Repair Microsoft Store if the standalone installation also fails
Work through Microsoft’s Windows 11 Store sequence:
- Sign in to Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select the profile icon and sign in with the intended Microsoft account.
- Install Windows updates
- Go to Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
- Install everything offered and restart if requested.
- Update Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.
- Allow any Store update to complete.
- Repair Microsoft Store
- Go to Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store, select … → Advanced options → Repair.
- Reopen the Store and retry Copilot.
- Reset Microsoft Store only if Repair fails
- Return to Microsoft Store → Advanced options → Reset.
- Resetting can remove the Store app’s local data and sign-in state.
- Sign in again and retry the official Copilot listing.
These are Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 Store troubleshooting and app repair procedures. ^3^ ^4^
To determine whether this is Copilot-specific, try installing one small free app from the Store. If that also fails, the problem is with the Store installation path rather than only Copilot.
If this is a work- or school-managed laptop
Ask the administrator to check whether:
- Microsoft Store or user-initiated app installation is blocked by policy.
-
copilot.cloud.microsoft and the required Copilot endpoints are allowed.
- A Copilot install policy prevents user-driven installation.
Microsoft supports deploying the current unified Copilot app through Intune, Configuration Manager, Group Policy, or an offline Windows installer when Store installation is unavailable. ^5^
Do not apply enterprise deployment policies on a personal, unmanaged laptop.
If Windows still cannot install it
If multiple Store apps fail even after repairing and resetting Microsoft Store, use:
Start → Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now
This repairs Windows system components while retaining files, applications, and settings; restart afterward and test the standalone installer again. This should be reserved for a confirmed system-wide Store failure rather than a Copilot-only error. ^6^
