The orange light can be turned off by fully shutting down or hibernating the PC; because it goes out after shutdown, it is likely indicating an active or sleep power state rather than remaining stuck on.
Turn off the light
- Save your work.
- Select Start → Power → Shut down.
- Wait until the screen, fans, and orange light turn off.
Closing the lid or briefly pressing the power button often puts a laptop into Sleep, which still uses a small amount of power and can leave status lights illuminated. Windows 10 distinguishes Sleep from a complete shutdown.^1^
If you want to resume your work later while using less power than Sleep:
- Open Settings → System → Power & sleep → Additional power settings.
- Select Choose what the power button does.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Under Shutdown settings, enable Hibernate, if available.
- Select Save changes.
- Use Start → Power → Hibernate.
If the light previously went off while the PC was running
There is no universal Windows setting for an orange charging LED. Its color and behavior are determined by the laptop manufacturer and exact model. “Windows 10 Pro” identifies the operating system, not the PC model.
Find the model by pressing Windows key + R, entering msinfo32, and checking System Manufacturer and System Model. Then check that manufacturer’s manual for the LED meaning.
If the LED behavior changed recently:
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Power.
- Run the Power troubleshooter.^2^
- If that does not help, shut down and unplug the charger.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds, release it, reconnect the charger, and start the PC. This discharges residual power and has resolved similar persistent charging-indicator behavior.^3^
Contact the PC manufacturer if the light remains on after a full shutdown, the battery stops charging, the computer becomes unusually hot, or the battery appears swollen.
