    1

Click your Start button, then just type powershell and from the resulting list, choose to run PowerShell as Administrator.

Paste this into PowerShell and press Enter.

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | reset-AppxPackage

Paste this into PowerShell and press Enter.

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost | reset-AppxPackage

When that completes, close PowerShell and restart (not shut down) your PC and check if that resolves the problem.

If that does not resolve the problem:

    Open the Settings App.

    Go to System - Recovery.

Click the 'Reinstall Now' button in the 'Fix problems with Windows Updates' section and wait for that process to complete.

This process should fix any corruption in Windows and will not affect your files, settings or installed apps.

Restart the Windows 11 Search process first; Windows automatically starts a fresh instance the next time you open Search.^1^

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Select Details. If necessary, first select More details.
    3. Find and right-click SearchHost.exe.
    4. Select End task, then confirm End process.
    5. Press Windows key + S and test a query longer than three letters.

    2. Restore the Windows text-input service

If typing also fails in other Windows interfaces, or the language/input selector is unresponsive:

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
    3. Find:
      • Text Input Management Service on Windows 11 25H2 or later; or
      • Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service on earlier Windows 11 versions.
    4. Double-click the service.
    5. If Startup type is Disabled, change it to Manual or Automatic.
    6. If it is stopped, select Start.
    7. Select OK, sign out of Windows, and sign back in.

This service allows ctfmon.exe and the Windows input framework to initialize.^2^

    3. Run the Search troubleshooter

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Run:
    msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic

    1. Select the symptoms that apply and let Windows complete any repairs.
    2. Restart the computer and test Search again.^1^

Also install any pending updates from Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, then restart.

    4. Reset Windows Search if it still stops accepting input

Microsoft provides the ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 script for Windows 11. Administrator permission is required, and the reset might temporarily reduce the relevance of results while Search recovers.^1^

    1. Open Settings > System > About and confirm that the device runs Windows 11.
    2. Download Reset Windows Search PowerShell script from the Microsoft procedure cited above.
    3. Right-click the downloaded ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 file and select Run with PowerShell.
    4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
    5. Wait for Done, close PowerShell, and test Search.

If PowerShell reports that scripts are disabled, follow the execution-policy steps in that same Microsoft procedure and restore the original policy afterward.

    5. Last fallback

If none of these repairs work, submit the issue through Feedback Hub > Desktop Environment > Search, including the Windows version from winver and noting that input consistently stops after three characters.^1^
