An application or feature powered by Windows Copilot to assist users with tasks and productivity
Your old personal Copilot chats may still be migrating to the updated app, so check each account in the legacy web experience and preserve any chats that remain accessible there. ^1^
Check the legacy Copilot experience
Since both accounts and their export histories have already been checked, proceed with this separate migration-status test:
- Open a new InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
- Go to copilot.microsoft.com.
- Sign in to the first personal account.
- If that account was originally accessed through Google or Apple, explicitly select Continue with Google or Continue with Apple. Entering the same email through the Microsoft-account sign-in flow might not open the same Copilot identity.
- Observe where Copilot sends you:
- If you remain at
copilot.microsoft.com, that account has not migrated yet. If its chats are visible, immediately copy the important content into a document. - If you are redirected to
copilot.com, the account has moved or is completing migration.
- If you remain at
- Close the private window and repeat for the other account.
Accounts can migrate at different times, even when used on the same device. An empty export does not by itself determine whether the missing chats were deleted or are still moving.
Complete the migration checks
For an account that redirects to the updated experience:
- Fully quit the Windows Copilot app and reopen it.
- Look for an in-app message such as “coming soon” or a link offering access to existing chats.
- Refresh Copilot on the web and check again later. Microsoft states that migration and cross-device synchronization time varies with the amount and type of content being moved. ^1^
- If the missing material was stored under Projects, open Notebooks in the left navigation; Projects were renamed to Notebooks in the updated app.
One documented exception is Group Chat content: Group Chat threads, messages, and content do not carry forward after August 18, 2026. Most other eligible chats and content should migrate. ^1^
Report chats that still do not appear
There is no documented user-side command to force or repair the migration. Report the affected account from the updated Copilot app:
- Select … in the upper-right corner.
- Select Send feedback.
- Select Report a problem.
- Include:
- When the chats disappeared, with time zone.
- That it happened immediately after the app update.
- Windows version and Copilot app version.
- Whether the legacy URL remained in place or redirected.
- Whether all chats or only specific chats are missing.
- A screenshot, with personal or confidential information removed.
If either account is a work or school account
The personal-account migration procedure does not cover Microsoft 365 organizational accounts. Ask the Microsoft 365 administrator to:
- Check Health → Service health for a Copilot advisory.
- Open a service request through Help & Support in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- If recovery is business-critical and organizational retention applies, investigate the stored interaction data with Microsoft Purview Content Search or eDiscovery. Microsoft 365 Copilot interaction records can include prompts and responses, subject to the organization’s policies and permissions. ^2^
