If the Microsoft account email is forgotten, use the username recovery flow first:
- On the Sign in page, select Sign-in options.
- Select Forgot my username.
- Enter the security phone number or recovery email that was added to the account.
- Request the security code, enter it, and select Next.
- The account will show a hint of the username, in a format like
j********@outlook.com.
If no security information was set up, check products or services where that Microsoft account was already signed in:
- Windows 10/11: Start > Settings > Accounts. Under Email & app accounts, the usernames associated with the device are shown.
- Office apps: Open Word or Excel, then File > Account. Under Product Information, check Belongs to.
- Email accounts: Search inboxes for Microsoft purchase receipts, subscription emails, or account messages.
- Xbox: Use the Xbox email address walkthrough if the account was used there.
If the username is known but not recognized anymore, use the account recovery flow and try any other alias or phone number on the account. Also verify the email domain carefully, such as .com vs .co.uk, and spelling variations in the name.
If sign-in recovery still fails, use the Microsoft sign-in helper or contact Microsoft Support through Get Help and Contact Support.
