    Hi, @Paul Spencer

Have you already tested whether Windows itself can hear the microphone?

Go to "Settings > System > Sound > Input", select your microphone, then choose "Start test" and speak normally. If Windows detects your voice there, the microphone itself is working.

Also check "Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone" and make sure "Microphone access" and "Let desktop apps access your microphone" are turned on. Microsoft lists these settings as required for microphone access:

If the issue still persists, to help narrow down the issue:

    1. When you test the microphone under "Sound > Input", does Windows detect any sound?
    2. Press Windows key + R, type winver and press Enter. What Windows version and build are shown?

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

Try this Windows troubleshooting path for voice typing or voice access microphone issues:

    1. Check that the correct microphone is selected.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Input, select the microphone to use in Choose a device for speaking or recording.
      • If available, open the device properties and run a microphone test. If the test does not detect sound, continue with the steps below.
    2. Make sure microphone permissions are turned on.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Turn on Microphone access.
      • Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
      • Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
    3. Check the physical connection.
      • If using an external microphone, make sure it is properly connected.
      • If using a headset, make sure it is not muted.
      • If using Bluetooth, make sure the device is paired and connected.
    4. Test whether Windows can hear the microphone.
      • In Settings > System > Sound, select the microphone.
      • Use the microphone test and speak into it.
      • If the recorded sample or input meter does not respond, increase the input level or microphone volume.
    5. If text still does not appear when speaking:
      • Adjust the microphone input level.
      • Try a quieter location.
      • If using a built-in microphone, try a headset or external microphone.
    6. If Windows is not detecting the microphone at all, reinstall the audio driver.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
      • Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
      • If needed, return to Device Manager and select Scan for hardware changes, then Update driver.
      • Warning: uninstalling drivers can temporarily disable audio devices until Windows reinstalls them.
    7. Run the built-in audio troubleshooter.
      • In Windows 11: Settings > System > Sound.
      • Scroll to Advanced and use the sound troubleshooting options for input devices.

If the microphone works in the Windows sound test but voice typing still fails, also check whether Windows shows either of these messages:

    • Voice typing needs access to your microphone: turn on microphone access in Privacy & security > Microphone.
    • Voice typing isn't available in the current language: install a supported language.
