How to repaginate a document?

When I try to repaginate a poetry submission that begins numbering on page 3 to have it begin on page 1, the old numbers continue to appear and I cannot delete them or start over.

    Just to be clear, you are saying that numbering now restarts on the third physical page, and you want to prevent that from happening? In that case, go to the third page and display the Page Number Format dialog box (Insert tab > Page Number > Format Page Numbers). Choose the "Continue from previous section" option under page numbering.
