A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
Hi Dan,
An unexpected Excel closure can cause significant disruption, especially when the workbook contains several hours of unsaved work. To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:
- Recover the Unsaved Workbook
Please try these steps before creating or editing additional workbooks:
- Open Excel and select File > Info.
- Select Manage Workbook > Recover Unsaved Workbooks.
- Review the available files and check the date and time shown for each one.
- Open the most recent version, then immediately select File > Save As and save it with a new name.
- Configure AutoRecover
To reduce the amount of work that could be lost in the future:
- In Excel, select File > Options > Save.
- Enable Save AutoRecover information every and set the interval to 5 minutes.
- Enable Keep the last AutoRecovered version if I close without saving.
- Note the AutoRecover file location shown on the same page.
- Select OK, restart Excel, and confirm that the settings remain enabled.
- Use AutoSave for Future Workbooks
For more consistent protection, save important workbooks to OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online in .xlsx format and confirm that the AutoSave switch is enabled.
AutoSave can save supported Microsoft 365 files every few seconds and provides version history. Local files and CSV files do not receive the same level of protection.
- Launch Excel in safe mode and isolate add-ins
- Press Windows + R.
- Type excel.exe /safe and select OK.
- If Excel opens without crashing, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage, select COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Clear all add-ins and select OK.
- Close Excel and open it normally.
- If the crashes stop, re-enable the add-ins one at a time until the problematic add-in is identified.
- Repair Office
- Close all Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Open Windows Settings (press Windows + I).
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office in the list.
- Select the three dots (…) next to it and choose Modify.
- If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
- Choose Online Repair > then select Repair.
- Follow the on‑screen instructions until it completes.
I hope your issue gets resolved soon. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.
