Custom domain verification fail

Hello,

I created my first Microsoft Entra tenant for a new business. When I tried to add my custom domain, verification failed.

The portal displays: “Unable to verify domain name. Ensure you have added the record above at the registrar, and try again in a little while.”

The browser developer console shows:

Error code: Request_BadRequest

Details code: DomainInUse

The required TXT record is correctly configured and publicly visible. The domain appears to be associated with another Microsoft tenant that I do not recognize or have access to.

I contacted my registrar, GoDaddy. Their support team said they could not find anything on their side and advised me to contact Microsoft.

However, opening a support request through Azure/Entra requires a paid support plan. I have also tried reaching Microsoft Support by email, but do not yet have a case number.

What is the correct support route for a new business in this situation? Is there a way to request domain ownership verification and release without purchasing an Azure technical support plan?

Why should a new business have to pay to resolve an existing domain association it did not create and cannot remove itself? I can prove ownership of the domain, but I need Microsoft’s help to resolve the tenant conflict.

Any guidance on the appropriate team or support channel would be appreciated.

    Hello Muhammad,

    like you already wrote DomainInUse means the domain is already in use in a other Tenant.
    Did you already check what kind of Tenant that is? because the path differs based onthe kind of Tenant.

    how you can check it is via this URL: https://login.microsoftonline.com/common/userrealm/******@contoso.com?api-version=2.1 in this URL change the "******@contoso.com" with a Mail address with you domain i does not need to exist the result should look like this:

      {
        "NameSpaceType": "Managed",
        "Login": "******@yourdomain.com",
        "DomainName": "yourdomain.com",
        "FederationBrandName": "Your Company",
        "TenantBrandingInfo": [ ... ],
        "cloud_instance_name": "microsoftonline.com"
      }

    Please do not post your domain name or the full result in this Thread.

    in here you can see if its a managed or unmanaged domain

    • if you see "isViral": true then someone once signed up for a free service such as Power BI with a address at your domain then you can take it over yourself at no additional costs: Internal admin takeover then you remove the domain after the takeover and add it in your new tenant
    • if you see "NameSpaceType": "Federated" with a GoDaddy sign-in URL - then the domain is ina a Microsoft 365 Tenant that GoDaddy set up.
    • if its a managed tenant then Microsoft needs to release it but you don´t need a paid azure plan for that. You can call https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/support/ or open a free ticket from the Microsoft 365 admin center (a free trial tenant also works)

    also one question did you or anyone bought "Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy"
    also if you haven´t tried via https://gettenantpartitionweb.azurewebsites.net/ you can also find out the Tenant ID of the Tenant where your Domain is in use.

    please comment when you need further investigation or further Help.

    also please if this already helped you mark this answer as Helpful so others will also find this answer quicker :)

    Best Regards Alex
