Organizing and editing contact information within Microsoft Teams Free
For Microsoft Teams for personal use, three separate actions are needed:
- Clear the badge count
- Open the unread chats or channels tied to that badge count.
- If the count is from mentions, open the channel directly or go to the Mentions or Tag mentions view at the top of the chat list and read them.
- To reset everything at once, at the top of the chat or channel list select More options > Mark all as read. This clears unread indicators and resets the badge count.
- Delete the chat
- Deleting a one-on-one chat removes it from the chat list on all devices and it is no longer searchable.
- The other person still keeps the chat history, and shared files or other shared content can remain accessible unless permissions are changed separately.
- If a new chat is started with that person later, it appears as a new chat without the old conversation history on this side.
- Remove the contact
- In Teams for personal use, contacts can only be deleted for users that are blocked.
- Hover over the person in the chat tab and block them.
- Then go to Settings > People > Blocked People.
- Select ... on mobile or Manage on desktop, then select Delete.
- This removes the user from the current exported contacts list. Chat history is not deleted by this contact deletion step.
- Contact list updates can take up to 24 hours to appear in the contact experience.
If the person still appears after deleting the chat, use the contact-removal steps above and then use Mark all as read to force the badge back to zero.
