Additional features, settings, or issues not covered by specific Microsoft Teams Free categories
If the old account is a Teams personal/Microsoft account, removing it completely means closing the entire Microsoft account tied to it. That also removes access to other Microsoft consumer services on that account, such as Outlook.com, OneDrive, Skype, Xbox Live, or Windows.
Steps:
- Go to the Microsoft account closure page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should be deleted.
- Complete the account closure process.
Before closing it, export any important Teams data such as contacts and conversation history if needed.
If using the Teams mobile app, the closure process can also be started from: Profile picture > Settings > Delete account
If the goal is only to stop using the old account in Teams without deleting the Microsoft account:
- In Teams on desktop, Mac, or web: select the profile picture at the top of the app, then select Sign out.
- In a browser: select the profile picture at the top right, then select Sign out.
- On Windows, old personal accounts can also be removed from the device at Start > Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts > select the account > Remove account.
- On macOS, remove saved account entries in Finder > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access, then delete the account entry.
If the old account is actually an old work or school organization showing inside Teams personal, leave that organization instead:
- In Microsoft Teams for personal use, go to Settings.
- Choose Accounts and orgs.
- Next to the organization, select Leave.
- Confirm Leave in the browser window.
It can take a few hours to update. After that, sign out of Teams and sign back in.
