Hi Microsoft team,

I would like clarification on the capabilities of Copilot in Microsoft Teams when using a personal Microsoft account.

My understanding is that:

  • Microsoft Teams (Personal) displays Copilot-related UI elements.
  • Microsoft Copilot can access uploaded files and chat context in some scenarios.
  • However, Microsoft 365 Copilot features that work with organizational data (for example, meeting transcripts, tenant-wide search, files across SharePoint/OneDrive, and business productivity workflows) appear to require a work or school account and the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

My question is:

What are the exact capabilities and limitations of Copilot in Microsoft Teams (Personal)?

Specifically:

  1. Can Copilot in Teams Personal access and reason over files uploaded into personal chats?
  2. Can Copilot summarize personal Teams chat conversations?
  3. Can Copilot summarize meetings held in Teams Personal?
  4. Are meeting transcripts supported in Teams Personal, and if so, can Copilot use them?
  5. Which Copilot experiences require Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing and an organizational account?
  6. Is there an official capability matrix comparing:
    • Microsoft Copilot
      • Copilot in Teams Personal
        • Microsoft 365 Copilot

The reason for the question is that I found multiple Copilot entry points and UI experiences, but it is not clear which capabilities are available in a personal Microsoft account versus a work or school account.

My key finding is for Copilot in Teams Personal, core Copilot capabilities are missing. (such as Copilot Teams meetings/chats summarisations, transcripts, etc)

Thank you! :)

    Hello

Your understanding/description is essentially correct. Copilot in Teams personal is still fairly new for subscribers and it is quite basic, it doesn't have the full features like that under Work/School account.

Copilot in Teams personal appears as a separate Copilot tab where you can ask questions, draft text, summarize content you provide, and upload files/images from your device or personal OneDrive

Its features are described here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/teams/personal/premium-copilot/chat-with-copilot-teams-personal

And it can analyze files you upload. See details here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-copilot/file-upload-in-microsoft-copilot That does not mean Copilot automatically has access to files previously shared inside an ordinary personal Teams chat. The file-upload capability is part of the Copilot conversation ITSELF.

Teams Free/Personal supports live captions. It is real-time captions and does not document the normal persistent meeting-transcript/Copilot meeting workflow available in business Teams.

In organizational Teams, Copilot can explicitly summarize Teams chat/channel conversations and, when a meeting has been transcribed, use the meeting transcript. This feature is not available for Teams personal.

    Can someone help?

The AI-generated answer is not clear.

Where is the evidence that "conversation summarisation" refers to Teams Personal chats?

Copilot does not do that directly in Teams Personal.

There is no Copilot button within a conversation, that I can click to summarise a conversation, similar to what can be done in Microsoft Outlook.

    Please help! :)

For Teams personal, the supported Copilot capabilities in the provided documentation are limited to the Copilot tab experience:

    1. Chat with Copilot in Teams personal
      • Copilot can summarize conversations, draft responses, and gather quick insights.
      • In the Copilot tab, prompts can be typed or dictated.
      • Preselected prompts include grammar help, translation, and email subject suggestions.
    2. Files in Teams personal
      • Copilot in Teams personal can reference files and images added to the prompt.
      • Supported input paths documented are:
        • Add content from personal OneDrive
        • Upload files from the device
      • This supports Copilot using attached content in the prompt context.
    3. Personal chat conversation summarization
      • The documentation states Copilot in Teams personal can summarize conversations.
    4. Meetings, meeting summaries, and transcripts in Teams personal
      • No support details are provided in the available documentation for:
        • meeting summarization in Teams personal
        • meeting transcripts in Teams personal
        • Copilot using Teams personal meeting transcripts
      • Based on the available material, only chat-based Copilot capabilities in the Teams personal Copilot tab are documented.
    5. What requires Microsoft 365 Copilot and an organizational account
      • Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium) includes grounding in organizational data such as emails, files, meetings, calendars, Teams, and organizational relationships through Microsoft Graph, Work IQ, Copilot Search, and semantic indexing.
      • This is the experience tied to work or school scenarios and Microsoft 365 organizational data.
      • Copilot Chat (Basic) for work is also distinct from Teams personal. It is available with eligible Microsoft 365 licenses and primarily uses web data, with organizational content only when explicitly provided or when used in supported Microsoft 365 app contexts.
    6. Capability matrix
      • No official side-by-side matrix covering exactly Microsoft Copilot vs Copilot in Teams Personal vs Microsoft 365 Copilot is present in the available documentation.
      • The available documents do distinguish these experiences:
        • Microsoft Copilot (free): general AI chat, web answers, image creation, Edge summarization.
        • Copilot in Teams personal: Copilot tab for summarizing conversations, drafting responses, quick insights, and prompting with uploaded files or OneDrive content.
        • Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium): deep Microsoft 365 app integration and grounding in organizational data.

Based on the available documentation, the supported conclusion is:

    • Teams personal does have Copilot UI and chat-based Copilot features.
    • Teams personal documentation supports conversation summarization and file-referenced prompting.
    • The provided documentation does not confirm Teams personal support for meeting summaries, transcripts, or transcript-grounded Copilot experiences.
    • Organizational-data experiences across Microsoft 365 require the Microsoft 365 Copilot work/school ecosystem, not a personal Teams account.
