A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
To turn off OneDrive and stop syncing in Microsoft 365 on Windows:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Select Help and Settings > Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC.
- Confirm with Unlink account.
This stops OneDrive from syncing on that computer. Files are not deleted by unlinking, and they can still be accessed on OneDrive on the web.
If the goal is to stop sync temporarily instead of fully disconnecting:
- Right-click the OneDrive icon on the taskbar.
- Select Pause syncing.
- Select Quit OneDrive if syncing should stop completely for now.
If OneDrive should also be hidden in Windows 10/11:
- Open File Explorer.
- Right-click OneDrive and select Properties.
- On the General tab, check Hidden.
- Select the OneDrive icon again and choose Quit OneDrive.
If OneDrive should be removed from the PC:
- Open Settings.
- Go to the list of installed apps.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive.
- Select Uninstall.
For Microsoft 365 work or school environments, an admin can also disable the Sync button for SharePoint libraries across the organization with SharePoint Online Management Shell by running:
Set-SPOTenant -HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite $true
This blocks new syncs from being started, but does not affect existing syncs.
