An Azure backup service that provides built-in management at scale.
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A,
@Priya Jayaraman I hope you are doing well,
If you are referring to Azure Site Recovery (ASR) for Azure-to-Azure VM disaster recovery, it does use a storage account, but this is different from Azure Backup storage.
When replication is enabled:
- Site Recovery uses a cache storage account in the source region. Changes from the source VM are written to this account before being replicated to the target region.
By default, one cache storage account is created per Recovery Services vault and can be reused by protected VMs.
The replicated data is ultimately stored in the target region, normally in replica managed disks for Azure-to-Azure replication.
The Recovery Services vault stores Site Recovery configuration and metadata; it does not store the replicated VM data itself.
You can identify the ASR cache storage account from the VM's Disaster recovery page:
VM > Operations > Disaster recovery > Infrastructure view
The infrastructure view shows the source VM, target resources, and cache storage account.
If you mean Azure Backup rather than ASR, that works differently. Azure Backup automatically manages the storage associated with the Recovery Services vault; you don't normally select a customer-owned storage account for the backup data.
