I am trapped in an identity tenant mismatch loop when attempting to activate and access my Azure for Students subscription. I completed academic verification using my university email address and received the official "Welcome to your Azure for Students account" confirmation email with the $100 credit offer. However, my personal Microsoft account (live.com) was incorrectly dropped into Microsoft's internal Microsoft Services directory tenant (f8cdef31-a31e-4b4a-93e4-5f571e91255a) as an unmapped guest rather than provisioning its own default personal directory.

Because of this, every Azure Portal blade (including Subscriptions, Education Hub, and Help + Support) fails with access token errors, completely blocking me from using the portal or submitting a standard support ticket.

Account & Identity Details:

  • Personal Microsoft Account (Sign-in): ******@gmail.com
  • Identity Provider: live.com
  • Verified Academic Email: ******@buffalo.edu
  • Stuck Tenant ID: f8cdef31-a31e-4b4a-93e4-5f571e91255a (Tenant Name: Microsoft Services)
  • Session ID: b65de818-4edd-43dc-a141-2714c5866d1d
  • Correlation ID: b65de818-4edd-43dc-a141-2714c5866d1d

Observed Behaviors & Errors:

  1. Sign-in / Routing Error (AADSTS50020):

AADSTS50020: User account '******@gmail.com' from identity provider 'live.com' does not exist in tenant 'Microsoft Services' and cannot access the application 'c44b4083-3bb0-49c1-b47d-974e53cbdf3c' (Azure Portal) in that tenant.

  1. Access Token Failure (AADSTS16000):

When navigating the portal, frequent popups appear across multiple extensions (including the Education blade and Microsoft_Azure_SupportPortalExtension):

interaction_required: AADSTS16000: User account '{EUII Hidden}' from identity provider 'live.com' does not exist in tenant 'Microsoft Services' and cannot access the application 'e6694c91-1590-4e35-9bb7-b865c638b9c1' (Microsoft_Azure_SupportPortalExtension) in that tenant.

  1. Portal State:
    • Under Portal settings > Directories + subscriptions, the current directory is f8cdef31-a31e-4b4a-93e4-5f571e91255a, and the directory table states "No directories found".
      • Under Subscriptions, it reports "No subscriptions in f8cdef31-a31e-4b4a-93e4-5f571e91255a directory".
        • Navigating to the student sign-up page returns: "Unable to complete Azure for Students verification."
          • Navigating to Help + Support fails to load ticket creation because Microsoft_Azure_SupportPortalExtension cannot acquire an access token for the tenant.

Root Cause:

The student verification handshake completed the academic entitlement, but failed to provision/bind a standalone Microsoft Entra ID tenant to my personal identity (******@gmail.com). My session remains scoped to the default Microsoft Services tenant, which rejects token issuance for external live.com identities.

Requested Action from Azure Engineers:

  1. Manually initialize/provision the default personal Microsoft Entra tenant for ******@gmail.com.
  2. Attach/bind the approved Azure for Students subscription ($100 academic credit) to this directory.
  3. Remove the association/stale routing of my account to the internal Microsoft Services (f8cdef31-a31e-4b4a-93e4-5f571e91255a) tenant. You already have the Azure - Microsoft Q&A page open in your background tabs. Click Ask a question and paste the complete template below:

    Hi @Vaibhav Ranashoor

Thanks for all the detail. The good news is your account isn't trapped anywhere. The "Microsoft Services" tenant is just where the portal drops a personal account that has no Azure directory of its own. "No directories found" tells us your gmail account doesn't have a subscription yet, so the Azure for Students subscription most likely got created under a different account.

    1. Open the welcome email and check which address it was sent to. That's the account holding the subscription.
    2. If it went to your buffalo.edu address, sign in to https://portal.azure.com with that school account in an InPrivate window and check Subscriptions and Education Hub. The subscription would sit inside the university's directory, which is normal for school accounts.
    3. If it went to your gmail, sign in with gmail, then click your profile picture > Switch directory and check whether any other directory appears.
    4. If neither account shows the subscription, the activation didn't finish provisioning, and only the Azure education team can fix that. Microsoft moderators here forward these cases and will ask for your details by private message. If the Help + Support page shows the token error, click Ignore and it often still loads.

One small tip: your post includes some leftover template instructions near the middle. Editing those out will make it easier for a moderator to pick up.

If this helped, please click Accept Answer so other students stuck on the same error can find it.
