USB devices are not registering for data transfer, it is charging devices via the ports but won't transfer or register the device is connected.

I have installed all the latest updates, uninstalled drivers, reinstalled drivers, and I have made sure they don't disconnect when the device goes idle. I can't see any other options online.

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. You’ve already taken key steps by updating Windows, reinstalling USB drivers, and preventing idle disconnects, which shows you’re thorough in your troubleshooting.

Empathy: It’s natural to feel frustrated when USB devices refuse to appear in File Explorer or Device Manager yet still receive power.

Reason and resolution: In many cases, USB devices charge but aren't recognized due to driver or power-management issues. For example, Windows may disable USB controllers to save power, preventing data communication. To address this, open Device Manager → expand “Universal Serial Bus controllers,” right-click each USB Root Hub → choose “Properties” → on the Power Management tab, uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. Additionally, navigate to Power Options → Change advanced power settings → under USB settings disable “USB selective suspend” to stop Windows from dropping the USB link during inactivity.

After disabling these power-saving settings, restart your computer and reconnect the USB device. You may also consider uninstalling all entries under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and allowing Windows to reinstall them upon reboot, which can resolve driver-level inconsistencies.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

If your USB devices are charging but not registering for data transfer, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some detailed troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the problem:

    1. Test Different USB Ports: Sometimes, specific USB ports may malfunction. Try connecting your device to different USB ports on your computer to see if it registers.
    2. Check Device Manager: Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start menu and selecting it. Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark, which indicates a problem. If you find any, try the following:
      • Right-click on the device and select "Update driver" to search for updated drivers automatically.
      • If that doesn't work, right-click again and choose "Uninstall device." After uninstalling, disconnect the USB device and reconnect it to reinstall the driver automatically.
    3. Power Management Settings: Windows may turn off USB devices to save power. To prevent this:
      • In Device Manager, expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section.
      • Right-click on each "USB Root Hub" and select "Properties."
      • Go to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
    4. USB Selective Suspend: This feature can sometimes cause issues with USB devices. To disable it:
      • Open Control Panel and navigate to "Power Options."
      • Click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan.
      • Click on "Change advanced power settings."
      • Expand the "USB settings" section and then expand "USB selective suspend setting."
      • Set it to "Disabled" for both battery and plugged in.
    5. Check for Non-Compliant Devices: If you are using USB 3.0 devices, they may not function correctly on USB 3.0 ports if they are non-compliant. Try connecting the device to a USB 2.0 port instead. Non-compliant devices may show errors such as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" in Device Manager.
    6. Update Windows: Ensure your Windows operating system is fully updated, as updates can fix bugs related to USB functionality. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
    7. Test the Device on Another Computer: If possible, connect the USB device to another computer to determine if the issue lies with the device itself or your computer.
    8. Check for Hardware Issues: Inspect the USB device and cable for any physical damage. If the device is damaged, it may not function correctly.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, consider contacting the manufacturer of the USB device for further assistance or checking for any known issues related to your specific device model.
