The required package must be downloaded for the computer’s exact HP product number; “Calistus,” the processor, and the Windows Product ID do not identify the HP model, and the microphone-array component is commonly included in the model-specific audio package rather than offered as a separate download.
1. Find the HP product number
Do not post the serial number or Windows Device/Product ID publicly.
- Press Windows+R, enter
msinfo32, and press Enter.
- In System Summary, record:
- System Model
- System SKU
- BaseBoard Product
- If these do not identify it, check the HP label on the underside or inside the battery compartment for Product No., ProdID, or P/N.
The precise model is necessary because HP’s driver catalog is model-specific. Microsoft Q&A also recommends using System Information to identify the appropriate HP audio driver when an internal microphone is missing.^1^
2. Install the HP audio package
- Open HP’s official driver page.^2^
- Enter the product number or System SKU—not “Calistus” and not the Windows Product ID.
- Select the Windows version offered for that model.
- Under Driver-Audio, download the HP-provided package, which may be named for Realtek, Conexant, Intel Smart Sound Technology, or another model-specific audio component.
- If HP lists chipset or supporting audio-controller packages, follow HP’s installation instructions and stated order; do not assume every model requires chipset installation first.
- Install the package and restart when its installer requests it.
Avoid driver-download aggregators and do not install a driver intended for another HP model. Microsoft recommends the PC manufacturer’s driver when Windows Update does not supply a suitable audio driver.^3^
3. Branch according to Device Manager
Right-click Start → Device Manager, then select View → Show hidden devices. Examine:
- Audio inputs and outputs
- Sound, video and game controllers
- System devices
- Other devices
Then use the matching case:
A. Microphone Array, Internal Microphone, or an audio device is greyed out or disabled
- Right-click that device.
- Select Enable device.
- Open Settings → System → Sound → Input and test it.
Enable a disabled device before considering removal.^4^
B. An actual audio device appears under “Sound, video and game controllers,” but the microphone remains absent
Because HP Assistant and Windows Update have already been tried, reinstall that audio device:
- Right-click the actual audio controller or codec—not unrelated NVIDIA display entries or other system devices.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall, then restart.
- Install the HP audio package downloaded in step 2.
- If it still does not appear, open Device Manager and select Action → Scan for hardware changes.
Microsoft documents this procedure when Windows does not detect a microphone.^5^
C. An unknown device or warning icon appears
Open Properties → Details → Hardware Ids and record the first value. Also check Properties → General for a Device Manager error code. These identify whether the missing component is the audio codec, digital microphone controller, or another supporting device. For example, Code 29 points to a firmware-disabled device, while Code 31 calls for reinstalling or updating the vendor driver.^6^
D. No audio/microphone hardware or unknown device appears anywhere
Check the model-specific HP documentation before changing BIOS/UEFI settings; not every HP computer exposes an onboard-audio option or audio diagnostic. If supported, run HP’s UEFI hardware audio test. If the microphone fails there—or the internal audio hardware remains completely absent in Device Manager after the correct OEM packages are installed—contact HP for firmware or hardware diagnosis.
4. If the microphone appears but applications cannot use it
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and enable:
- Microphone access
- Let apps access your microphone
- The individual application, where listed
- Let desktop apps access your microphone
Then use Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the microphone, and run Start test.^7^
Windows 11 26H2 itself does not identify which HP audio driver is required. Microsoft’s published 26H2 issues include a USB Audio Class 1.0 issue, but that is not evidence that a missing built-in HP microphone array has the same cause.^8^
