Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Yes—whether payment is needed depends on which Office product is on the old Mac.
- If it is a Microsoft 365 subscription: no new purchase is needed. The subscription is tied to the Microsoft account, not the Mac. Sign in on the new Mac with the same Microsoft account and install Office.
- If it is a one-time purchase of Office: it is not a subscription. It can be installed only on the allowed number of devices for that license, and if transferring to another Mac, it must be removed from the old device. Office 2024 or Office 2021 can be transferred to another computer that belongs to the same owner, not more than once every 90 days, except for hardware failure.
For a new Mac, use this path:
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to redeem or buy Office.
- Go to
https://microsoft365.com/setupif the product key has not been redeemed yet. - After the license is associated with the account, install from
https://m365.cloud.microsoft/appsby selecting Install. - Open Word, Excel, or another Office app and sign in with the same account to activate.
Important for Mac:
- The Mac App Store versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint require a Microsoft 365 subscription to activate.
- The Mac App Store apps are not compatible with Office 2019 licenses.
- If the old product is a perpetual Office license for Mac, install and activate it through the Microsoft account flow above rather than relying on the Mac App Store version.
If the old copy is still installed and the license is a one-time purchase, uninstall it from the old Mac after the transfer.
