Open Device Manager, enable or rediscover the laptop’s audio device, and reinstall its driver if Windows still reports that no audio device is installed.

    1. Make Windows detect the speaker again

    1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. If the audio device appears—often named Realtek Audio, High Definition Audio, or similar:
      • Right-click it.
      • Select Enable device if that option is available.
    4. If no audio device appears:
      • Select View > Show hidden devices.
      • Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    5. Check whether the red X disappears and the speakers return under Settings > System > Sound > Output. These are Microsoft’s specific detection steps for the “no audio device is installed” condition.^1^

    2. Reinstall the audio driver

If the audio device appears but remains unavailable:

    1. In Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device.
    2. Select Uninstall device, then confirm.
    3. Save open work and select Start > Power > Restart—use Restart, not Shut down.
    4. Windows should reinstall the audio driver during startup.^2^
    5. Return to Settings > System > Sound and confirm that Speakers appears under Output.

If Windows does not reinstall it, visit the laptop manufacturer’s support website, search using the exact laptop model, and install its latest Windows 11 audio driver. Restart afterward. A manufacturer driver may be available even when Device Manager says the best driver is already installed.^2^

    3. Run the Windows 11 audio diagnostic

If the device is detected but still does not work:

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    2. Find Audio and select Run.
    3. Apply any proposed repair and test the speakers.^3^

    4. Conditional checks

    • If this began immediately after an update: Open the audio device’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available, then restart. The option exists only when Windows retained an earlier driver.^4^
    • If the device is present but audio remains unavailable: Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.^4^
    • If the internal audio device never appears, even after scanning and installing the exact manufacturer driver, the next step is the laptop manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics or service support; Windows cannot reinstall a device that the firmware or hardware no longer detects.
