    Excel Save Issue on iPad

IPadOS 27.2, Excel v115.2 all latest releases

    • Open an excel file as normal from Files or Excel directly
    • Make changes
    • Don’t just hit the save < in upper left of screen (Excel will freeze)
    • Select the file name just to right of the <
    • Select Save As
    • A pop up shows where it can be saved.
    • Select Files then the target folder
    • Change name of file (same name doesn’t work)
    • Select Save icon in upper right
    • Now can hit < in upper left to exit

When I use the same file name for Save As and select Replace that it returns an error 48. So I wonder if I select < to save the file, maybe it gets that same error but the Excel app is not handling it correctly and freezes.

Hope this helps Microsoft come up with a real fix soon!

    Hi Mike Gooding,

That sounds especially frustrating after you have already tried several fixes.

Could you confirm whether Excel freezes when saving a completely new blank workbook, and whether the file is stored in OneDrive, iCloud Drive, or on the iPad itself? This will help determine whether the problem is file-specific, storage-related, or affecting the Excel app more generally.

If the same behavior occurs with a new workbook in every storage location, please include your iPad model, iPadOS version, and Excel version when submitting the issue through Excel > profile icon > Help & Feedback. For direct troubleshooting assistance, you can also use Microsoft’s official Excel for iPad support page.

Thank you so much for your understanding.

Use OneDrive or on-device storage instead of iCloud Drive as a diagnostic workaround; freezing with every new workbook makes the save location the next useful variable to isolate.

    Test outside iCloud Drive

This is not a confirmed permanent fix—Microsoft has not published an advisory establishing an iCloud-specific root cause—but recent reports describe Excel for iPad freezing or failing during saves.^1^

    1. In Excel, create a blank workbook and enter one value.
    2. Tap the File icon → Name.
    3. Select On My iPad or OneDrive, then tap Save. Microsoft documents choosing a different location from this screen.^2^
    4. Close and reopen that workbook, edit the cell, and verify the latest value remains.
    5. If OneDrive is not listed, use File → Open → Add a Place, select OneDrive, and sign in.^3^

    Interpret the result as follows:

    • OneDrive/on-device works: avoid direct iCloud Drive saves for now. Continue there or use Excel for the web/desktop until an Excel update resolves the behavior.
    • Every location freezes: proceed to the reset below; the issue is not isolated to iCloud Drive.
    • On-device works but both cloud locations fail: report the affected locations and network type to Microsoft.

    Reset Excel’s cloud integration

Since restarting, updating, signing out, reinstalling, checking storage, and testing blank workbooks have already failed, do not repeat them.

An additional distinct iPad recovery step reported for this save/freeze symptom is:

    1. Open the iPad Settings app.
    2. Select Excel. On some iPadOS versions, this may appear under Settings → Apps → Excel.
    3. Select Reset.
    4. Enable or select Reset Cloud Settings.
    5. Reopen Excel and repeat the one-cell test first in OneDrive or on-device storage, then in iCloud Drive.^4^

Recover from a freeze without immediately losing the session

If Excel freezes while unsaved changes may still be present:

    1. Do not force-close Excel, because doing so can discard those changes.
    2. Temporarily disable Wi-Fi or enable Airplane Mode from Control Center.
    3. Wait to see whether Excel becomes responsive.
    4. If it responds, save to an on-device location.
    5. Re-enable networking and verify that the saved file reopens with the latest changes.

This is a temporary recovery workaround reported for the same recent iPad save-and-exit symptom, not a repair.^4^

    Report and escalate

In Excel, select the profile picture → Help & Feedback, and submit the problem with:

    • Excel version/build and iPadOS version
    • iPad model
    • “Occurs with a new one-cell workbook”
    • Whether On My iPad, OneDrive, and iCloud Drive each pass or freeze
    • Approximate freeze time and whether Airplane Mode restores responsiveness
    • A screenshot or screen recording, if possible

Microsoft documents this in-app feedback route for Office on iOS.^5^ Feedback helps the product team track the regression, but it does not guarantee an individual support response.

For guided troubleshooting, use Answer Desk from the Excel for iPad support page.^6^ If Excel is signed in with a work or school account, contact the organization’s IT helpdesk or Microsoft 365 administrator instead.
