Since external speakers work, Windows audio is functioning and the issue is likely with the selected output device, sound settings, enhancements, or the internal audio driver.
Try these steps in order:
- Check the selected output device
- Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow next to the volume slider to open the list of audio devices.
- Make sure the laptop’s built-in speakers are selected, not the external speaker or monitor audio device.
- Set the internal speakers as the default output device
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- In Output, select the laptop speakers.
- This sets them as the default output device.
- If an external monitor is selected as default and it has no speakers, no sound will play from the laptop.
- Check mute and device settings
- Right-click the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider.
- Open More mixer settings.
- Make sure the speakers are not muted.
- Then go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Advanced > More sound settings.
- On the Playback tab, select the internal speakers, choose Properties, and confirm Device usage is set to Use this device (enable).
- Turn off audio enhancements
- Go to Start > Settings > Sound.
- Select the audio device being used.
- Under Advanced settings, set Audio enhancements to Off.
- Audio enhancements can cause speaker playback problems.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- In Audio, select Run.
- Restart the PC
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- This can clear temporary detection issues.
- Reinstall or update the audio driver
- Warning: uninstalling the driver will temporarily remove audio until Windows reinstalls it.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Update driver first.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If that does not help, right-click the audio device again and select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Delete the driver software for this device.
- Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
- If Windows still does not restore the internal speakers, install the latest audio driver from the HP support site for the exact HP ENVY model.
- If the internal speakers do not appear at all
- In Device Manager, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device is disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.
- If it is missing, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
