Yes. Windows 11 can be reinstalled without buying a new key if the device already has a digital license for the same edition of Windows 11.
Recommended path:
- On the laptop, check activation first: Start > Settings > System > Activation Confirm that Windows 11 is activated. If possible, also confirm the Microsoft account is linked to the digital license.
- On another working PC, create Windows 11 installation media:
- Go to the Windows 11 software download site.
- Under Create Windows 11 Installation Media, select Download Now.
- Run MediaCreationTool.exe and create a bootable USB drive.
- Back up files first. Creating or using installation media can erase data.
- Boot the HP laptop from the USB media.
- If it does not boot to setup automatically, check HP boot order or boot menu settings.
- In Windows Setup:
- Select language and keyboard settings.
- Choose Install Windows 11.
- If asked for a product key, select I don't have a product key.
- Choose the same Windows edition that was previously installed and activated on the laptop.
- For a clean reinstall:
- In the install flow, select the option that everything will be deleted.
- On the disk selection screen, delete the partitions on Disk 0 only until it shows Disk 0 Unallocated Space, then select Next.
- Do not delete partitions on any other disk.
- After installation finishes:
- Complete setup and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license, if applicable.
- Windows 11 should activate automatically online.
Important points:
- A new activation key is not required when reinstalling the same edition on a device that already has a digital license.
- If Windows Setup finds a product key stored in firmware, the product key screen might not appear.
- A clean install is not the same as HP factory restore. It reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations.
- If the goal is true factory state with HP-specific software and image, that would normally require HP recovery media or a recovery partition. Without those, the supported Microsoft option is a clean Windows reinstall.
- Since the PC originally came with Windows 10 and was upgraded to Windows 11 for free, reinstalling Windows 11 on the same device can still activate automatically if the digital license is present.
If a recovery drive is available later, it can be used to reinstall Windows through Windows RE > Recover from a drive, but that recovery media is created in advance and is intended for the device it was created for.
