Participating in early access and feedback programs for new Teams Free features
Yes—if duplicate Teams installations are present, uninstalling the older or duplicate Teams installation is a valid troubleshooting step.
On Windows, fully remove Teams by uninstalling both of these if they appear in Start > Settings > Apps:
- Microsoft Teams
- Teams Machine-Wide Installer
Recommended steps:
- Quit Teams by right-clicking the Teams icon in the taskbar and choosing Close window.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps.
- Search for teams.
- Uninstall Microsoft Teams.
- If listed, uninstall Teams Machine-Wide Installer too.
Important details:
- To fully uninstall Teams on Windows, both items must be removed.
- If only classic Teams is present because it was installed per-user, Teams Machine-Wide Installer might not appear.
- In many Microsoft 365 and new Teams scenarios, classic Teams is removed automatically after new Teams is installed, so no further action is required unless the old client remains or Teams still fails.
- If Teams for Education or institution-managed Teams is involved, checking with the IT admin is recommended because policies, updates, and permissions may be controlled centrally.
If Teams still is not working after uninstalling the duplicate or classic version, the next step is to reinstall Teams.
