    Hi Paul,

How did you start the Chat with

this person? We have no access

to what they told you to do or

what they changed on your PC.

For Windows 11, start with the built-in audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It runs diagnostics automatically and can fix many sound problems.

Then work through these steps in order:

    1. Check the selected output device
      • Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      • Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider.
      • Confirm audio is set to the correct device, such as the built-in speakers and not another output.
    2. Set the speakers as the default output device
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • In Output, select the device that should play sound.
      • If an external monitor is selected and it has no speakers, switch back to the PC speakers.
    3. Check hardware and volume basics
      • Make sure speakers or headphones are connected correctly.
      • Confirm power is on.
      • Make sure mute is off.
      • Check app-specific volume controls.
      • If using USB audio, try a different USB port.
      • If headphones are plugged in, unplug them and test the speakers again.
    4. Verify Windows Update status and restart
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • If updates are available, install them.
      • Restart the PC after updates.
      • If Update and restart appears under Start > Power, use it to apply pending updates.
    5. Update or reinstall the audio driver
      • Open Device Manager from the taskbar search box.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the sound device and select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
      • If that does not help, right-click the device again and select Uninstall device.
      • If shown, select Delete the driver software for this device.
      • Restart the PC. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
      • Save open work before restarting.
    6. If sound stopped after updates, roll back the audio driver
      • In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the sound device > Properties > Driver tab.
      • Select Roll Back Driver if available.

If the issue started immediately after a failed update, the most relevant path is: confirm the correct output device, install any pending Windows updates and restart, then update or reinstall the audio driver, and finally roll back the driver if the problem began after the update.
