Samsung gallery photos are in a random order, since downloading the photos from OneDrive onto my phone's internal storage

Hi,

I hhave downloaded thousands of photos from Microsoft's OneDrive, onto my phone's internal storage (Galaxy S25).

The photos now appear in the Samsung Gallery app, however they are in a random order.

I have tried to sort them by various ways (last modified date, date created, name etc), however this has not worked.

Because they were downloaded today, the detail of every photo uses today's date.

Within the Microsoft OneDrive, they are in the correct chronological order.

How can I get the photos to appear in the correct chronological order within Samsung Gallery please?

I have spent multiple hours trying to download the photos, and to resolve the issue. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

    Hello Danny Jones

I’m sorry you had to spend so long downloading these photos, only to find that their order was lost.

Samsung Gallery normally sorts the Pictures view using the date information available in each local file. For downloaded media, Samsung notes that the displayed date and time may be based on when the file was downloaded. Since all the OneDrive files were downloaded on the same day, Samsung Gallery may no longer have usable local dates with which to reproduce the OneDrive timeline.

Please open several affected photos in Samsung Gallery, swipe up, and check their details:

    • If Date taken still shows the original capture date, update Samsung Gallery and the phone software, then clear only the Gallery cache under Settings > Apps > Gallery > Storage > Clear cache, restart the phone, and allow Gallery to rebuild its index.
    • If the details show only today’s date and no original Date taken, changing the Gallery sorting option will not restore the chronology automatically. The dates would need to be corrected in the files’ metadata, either manually in Gallery or in bulk using a computer and a metadata-management tool. Test this first with copies of a few photos and keep the OneDrive originals unchanged.

For individual photos, supported Samsung Gallery versions may allow you to open the photo, swipe up, select Edit, and change its date and time. However, this would be impractical for thousands of photos.

Also, please do not delete the correctly ordered OneDrive copies until you have verified the repaired local collection. Microsoft announced that direct Samsung Gallery synchronization with OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026, so OneDrive Camera Backup is now the supported option for backing up new photos. Existing photos remain available through OneDrive.

Because the incorrect ordering occurs inside Samsung Gallery after the files have been downloaded, you may also submit an error report through Samsung Members > Support > Error reports, including system logs, so Samsung can confirm whether Gallery is ignoring embedded capture dates on your Galaxy S25.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
