    Dear Alex Docherty,

Please note that support for Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019 ended on October 14, 2025. As these products are now out of support, troubleshooting and recovery options may be limited, and upgrading to a supported version or migrating to Exchange Online should be considered where possible. For reference: Exchange Server 2019 and 2016 end of support roadmap

In this case, if Exchange Server 2016 Setup cannot uninstall, upgrade, or complete any maintenance action, to help narrow down the issue, could you please provide a bit more information?

    • What happens when you run Exchange 2016 Setup and choose Uninstall? What is the exact error message? If possible, please share the full error message (remember to remove personal information before sharing)
    • Is this the only Exchange server in the organization, or are there other Exchange servers still running?
    • Are there any user mailboxes, shared mailboxes, arbitration mailboxes, or public folders still hosted on this server?
    • Is the server part of a Database Availability Group (DAG)?
    • Is your environment running in a Hybrid configuration with Microsoft 365/Exchange Online?
    • Are you trying to remove Exchange after a migration, upgrade, or because the server is damaged?

Note: Manual removal is considered a last resort because it can leave Exchange-related objects in Active Directory and cause future installation or migration issues.
