Sometimes, when working in Excel 2024 LSTC , switching between sheets causes the colors and headers to disappear or no longer display correctly. Using the Filter tool can also make all open Excel files become unresponsive, leaving only the options to save or close them. Clicking inside the workbook feels like clicking on an empty desktop screen.

    Hi @Mohsen Safari

Thank you for providing these details. I understand that, in Excel 2024 LTSC build 17392.21000, switching between worksheets sometimes causes colours and headers to disappear, while using Filter may leave all open Excel workbooks unresponsive. That sounds particularly disruptive when the workbook still appears open but no longer responds to selections.

I am a fellow community user, so I cannot directly inspect your Excel installation. However, you could try the following basic troubleshooting steps:

    1. Test a new workbook: Create a blank workbook, add some sample data and formatting, enable Filter, and switch between several worksheets. This will help determine whether the problem is limited to a particular workbook.
    2. Perform an Office repair: Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, locate Microsoft Office LTSC 2024, select Modify, and try Quick Repair first. If the behaviour continues, try Online Repair > https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application
    3. Test without external displays: If you use multiple monitors, temporarily test Excel on one display only and check whether the colours, headers, and worksheet area render correctly.

Could you also provide a little more information to help narrow down the cause?

    • I would also like to confirm the exact Office version you are using. Based on the official Office LTSC 2024 update history, the latest volume-licensed version is currently Version 2408, Build 17932.21000, released on 17 September 2026. In your original post, you mentioned Build 17392.21000, so could you please check and confirm whether the correct build number is 17932.21000? If you are using Build 17932.21000, could you also confirm whether the freezing and display issue occurred in an earlier build, or whether it only started after updating to this latest version? This information may help us determine whether the behaviour could be related to the recent update.
    • Does the issue occur on multiple computers, or only on one specific device? If possible, please open the same workbook on another computer and check whether the problem can be reproduced there.
    • Are there currently any Excel or COM add-ins enabled?
    • When did the issue first start? For example, did it begin after an Office update, a Windows update, installing an add-in, or making any other changes to the computer?
    • Does the issue affect every workbook, or only this particular file?

Please try the suggested tests and let me know the results. This information may help determine whether the issue is related to the workbook itself, an add-in, or the Excel installation on the affected computer.

    Hi @Mohsen Safari

This helps determine whether an add-in is causing the issue.

    Press:

    Windows + R

    Run:

    excel /safe

If the issue disappears in Safe Mode, disable COM Add-ins:

    File → Options → Add-ins → Manage COM Add-ins → Go

    Disable add-ins and test again.

    Thanks.

This pattern matches an Excel display/rendering or workbook-environment issue more than a simple file corruption issue. Work through these checks in order:

    1. Install the latest Office and Windows updates Recent Excel updates include fixes for PivotTable refresh performance, freeze panes rendering, and geometric shape loading. Updating is the first step for hangs, freezes, and display problems.
    2. Test whether Excel is busy with another process Check the Excel status bar at the bottom of the window. If Excel is in use by another process, let that task finish before switching sheets or applying filters.
    3. Try Safe Mode troubleshooting Safe Mode bypasses Excel add-ins, startup folders, and most COM add-ins. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, the cause is likely an add-in or startup item.
    4. Check workbook content that commonly causes hangs or bad performance Review whether the workbook has any of these:
      • formulas referencing entire columns
      • array formulas with uneven numbers of elements
      • many hidden or zero-height/zero-width objects
      • excessive styles from repeated copy/paste between workbooks
      • excessive or invalid defined names
      • very large numbers of shapes or complex shape objects
    5. If the problem is mainly with older or heavily formatted files, update Excel and retest Recent Excel updates improved handling of large numbers of shapes and complex objects, and can significantly improve load times for older files.
    6. Test the file locally Save a copy of the workbook to a local drive and test there. Problems can be related to where the file is stored, especially with network locations, web folders, SharePoint, Remote Desktop/Citrix, offline files, or virtualized environments.
    7. Test Manual calculation mode for complex workbooks If the freeze happens when switching sheets or filtering a workbook with heavy formulas:
      • Go to Formulas
      • Select Calculation Options
      • Choose Manual
This helps determine whether automatic recalculation is causing the unresponsiveness.
    8. Check antivirus integration If antivirus software integrates with Excel, it can cause performance issues. Confirm the antivirus is up to date. If it has Excel integration or an Excel add-in, that integration can conflict with Excel. Important: Changing antivirus settings can make the PC vulnerable to malicious attacks. Use that workaround carefully.
    9. Perform a selective startup (clean boot) A background application, process, or service can conflict with Excel. A selective startup helps identify whether another program is causing the freezing.
    10. Repair Microsoft 365/Office programs Repairing the Office installation can resolve Excel not responding, hanging, or freezing.
    11. Check printer and video driver influence Excel checks the default printer and video drivers when it starts. Testing with a different printer driver such as Microsoft XPS Document Writer can help determine whether the issue is tied to a specific printer driver. The same applies to video driver-related rendering problems.
    12. If the workbook was generated by another application, test with a new workbook Files created by third-party applications can be generated incorrectly, which can cause features to fail or Excel to hang.

If the issue happens with multiple workbooks, especially when switching sheets and using filters, the highest-value checks are: update Excel/Windows, Safe Mode, clean boot, antivirus integration, local file test, and printer/video driver testing.

If the issue still continues after those steps, Microsoft Support is the next step for guided troubleshooting.
