If Windows Update is stuck at 99%, use this order of checks:
- Wait a little longer if there is still disk activity If the drive is still active, the update may still be finishing.
- Restart the PC A restart can clear apps or processes that are blocking the update.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the on-screen steps.
- Check free disk space
Windows needs at least:
- 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS
- 20 GB free for a 64-bit OS
- Check the Windows Update service
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update.
- Right-click Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply > OK.
- Press Win + R, type
- Check for updates again
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Repair system files
Open Command Prompt as administrator, then run:
Wait forDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth sfc /scannowsfcto reach 100%, then try Windows Update again. - If the update remains stuck at the same percentage, check for updates again or rerun the troubleshooter This is specifically recommended for updates stuck in the 51–99% range.
- If the issue is with Windows Upgrade Assistant stuck at 99% for more than four hours
Before restarting, copy
C:\$GetCurrent\Mediato the desktop, restart, copy it back toC:\$GetCurrent, then open Setup from the Media folder. On Get important updates, select Not right now, then continue the upgrade. - After the upgrade completes, install all available updates
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the PC when finished.
