Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
For a custom-domain address in classic Outlook, use this order:
- Try adding the account with File > Add Account.
- If Outlook says the password is wrong or shows an app-password message, get an app password from the email provider and use that instead of the normal password.
- If automatic setup fails, use manual setup:
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select File > Add Account.
- Enter the email address.
- Select Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually > Connect.
- Select IMAP.
- Enter the incoming and outgoing mail server settings from the email provider, then select Next.
- Enter the password or app password, then select Connect.
- If setup still fails, select Change Account Settings and correct the server names, ports, and SSL settings using the values from the email provider.
Important:
- Manual setup in classic Outlook is not available for Microsoft 365 or Exchange accounts unless POP or IMAP is enabled.
- If this address is a third-party/custom-domain mailbox, the mail host must provide the correct IMAP/POP/SMTP settings.
- If the domain’s web hosting service is incorrectly responding to Autodiscover requests, Outlook account setup can fail. In that case, the web service provider or web hosting provider must fix that server behavior.
