OneDrive in Microsoft 365 Developer Program limited to 10 GB instead of 5 TB

Hello,

I am using a Microsoft 365 Developer Program tenant and have encountered an unexpected OneDrive storage quota issue with one of my user accounts.

The account receives daily notifications stating:

“Your OneDrive is out of storage space” “You’ve reached your 10 GB storage limit.”

However, I expected this user account to have access to 5 TB of OneDrive storage, based on the default storage configuration for the Microsoft 365 Developer Program environment.

Could you please help clarify why the account is currently limited to 10 GB instead of the expected 5 TB, and advise whether any additional configuration or licensing is required to restore the expected storage quota?

Thank you for your assistance

    Dear DUYNGUYEN DINO,

Based on the information currently available for Microsoft 365 Developer Program tenants, the 10 GB OneDrive limit appears to be enforced at the license level for users assigned a Microsoft 365 E5 Developer license. Although the tenant-level OneDrive quota may display 1 TB or 5 TB, individual users licensed with the Developer SKU remain limited to 10 GB, and attempts to increase the quota through the Admin Center or PowerShell are not honored.

This behavior is expected for users licensed with the Microsoft 365 E5 Developer subscription. According to the Microsoft 365 Developer Program FAQ, Microsoft currently enforces a 10 GB OneDrive storage limit per user and a 300 GB storage limit per tenant for Developer subscriptions.

Once a user's OneDrive exceeds the allocated quota, the storage may become read-only, preventing users from uploading, syncing, or modifying files until enough storage has been freed to bring usage back within the allowed limit.

Based on this information, the 10 GB limit you are seeing is likely related to the storage entitlement associated with the Microsoft 365 E5 Developer license rather than a tenant configuration issue

Just to clarify, if a larger OneDrive quota is required for only one specific user, does that user necessarily need a qualifying non-developer commercial license?

Is there any supported way to increase the OneDrive storage quota for a single user to 1 TB or 5 TB while keeping the Microsoft 365 E5 Developer license, for example through the SharePoint Admin Center or PowerShell?

If not, could you please confirm that the 10 GB limit is enforced at the license level and cannot be overridden for an individual user?

    Hello,

I understand that the Microsoft 365 Developer Program currently provides a 10 GB OneDrive storage limit per user.

However, I would like to clarify whether it is technically possible to configure or override the maximum OneDrive storage quota for a specific user within the Developer tenant.

For example, is there any supported method through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, SharePoint Admin Center, or PowerShell to manually increase the OneDrive storage limit for one specific user beyond the default 10 GB?

If this is technically possible, could you please provide the required configuration or PowerShell command?

    Thank you for your clarification.

In a Microsoft 365 Developer Program tenant, the 10 GB limit is expected behavior for Developer SKU users. The developer subscription provides:

    • 10 GB per user for OneDrive storage
    • 300 GB pooled tenant storage for developer-only tenants

That is different from commercial Microsoft 365 plans, where many business plans provide 1 TB per user, and some enterprise plans can be increased to 5 TB.

If the account is licensed only with the Microsoft 365 E5 Developer subscription, no additional tenant default setting or PowerShell configuration can raise that user above the storage allowed by the assigned license. If a higher value is configured, the user’s OneDrive storage is rounded down to the maximum allowed by that license.

If the user previously showed a higher quota, quota enforcement may have reconciled the OneDrive limit back to the licensed entitlement.

To verify the currently applied limit for a user:

    1. Sign in to https://admin.microsoft.com as an administrator.
    2. Go to Users > Active users.
    3. Select the user.
    4. Open the OneDrive tab.
    5. Check the max value next to Storage used.

If a larger quota is required, the account needs a qualifying non-developer commercial license. The Developer Program license itself does not provide 5 TB per user.
