How can I opt out of an automatic Quota Tier upgrade from Free Tier to Tier 1?

I received an email from Microsoft Azure titled "Important update: Eligibility for Quota Tier upgrade".

The email states that my subscription is eligible for an upgrade from Free Tier to Tier 1 and that the upgrade will be processed automatically unless I choose to remain on the current tier within 3 days.

However, the opt-out link in the email only redirects me to Microsoft Learn documentation about quotas and limits. It does not provide any option to decline the upgrade or remain on the Free Tier.

I would like to:

Remain on the Free Tier.
Prevent any automatic upgrade to Tier 1.
Confirm whether Tier 1 could result in charges or changes to my current free usage.

How can I officially opt out of this automatic upgrade?

Hi,

You can opt out by setting tierUpgradePolicy to NoAutoUpgrade. To do this you may use Azure Cloud Shell (Bash mode) and running commands similar to below:

subscription_id="yourSubscriptionID"
az rest --method patch \
  --url "https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/$subscription_id/providers/Microsoft.CognitiveServices/quotaTiers/default?api-version=2025-10-01-preview" \
  --body '{"properties": {"tierUpgradePolicy": "NoAutoUpgrade"}}'

If you want to check your current settings you may run commands similar to below:

subscription_id="yourSubscriptionID"
az rest --method get \
  --url "https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/$subscription_id/providers/Microsoft.CognitiveServices/quotaTiers/default?api-version=2025-10-01-preview"

Hi TP,

Thank you for the information.

I ran the PATCH command successfully and the response returned:

"tierUpgradePolicy": "NoAutoUpgrade"

However, when I ran the GET command afterward to verify the current settings, the result still shows:

"tierUpgradePolicy": "OnceUpgradeIsAvailable"

Could you please clarify whether the opt-out setting has actually been applied, or if there is an additional step required to make the change take effect?

Hi, There is a delay for the change to show up with GET request, I believe it is due to caching.

Please re-run the above GET command and verify that it now returns "NoAutoUpgrade". Please reply back with your results. If it still returns "OnceUpgradeIsAvailable" I will have you run some more tests.

Thank you for checking.

I reran the GET request and it now returns "tierUpgradePolicy": "NoAutoUpgrade".

The update appears to have propagated successfully.
