    Hi Blythe,

Thank you for sharing what happened.

To assist you more effectively, could you please provide the following additional information?

    • Does this issue occur with all PowerPoint files or only with a specific presentation?
    • Can you open PowerPoint directly from the Windows Start menu without selecting a file?
    • Are other Microsoft Office applications, such as Word or Excel, working normally?
    • If possible, please share a screenshot of the complete error message, making sure that no personal or sensitive information is visible.

In the meantime, here are some steps you can try:

    1. Restart your computer, and then try opening PowerPoint again.
    2. Open PowerPoint in Safe Mode:
    • Press Windows key + R.
    • Enter powerpnt /safe, and then select OK.
    • Try opening one of the affected presentations.  If PowerPoint works correctly in Safe Mode, an add-in may be causing the issue. Go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add-ins > Go, disable all add-ins, and restart PowerPoint normally. If the issue no longer occurs, re-enable the add-ins one at a time to identify the problematic add-in.
    1. Repair the Office installation:
    • Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
    • Locate Microsoft 365 or your Office product.
    • Select the three-dot menu next to it, and then select Modify.
    • Try Quick Repair first.
    • If the issue continues, repeat the steps and select Online Repair.  Please note that Online Repair is more comprehensive, requires an Internet connection, and may require you to sign back in to Office afterward. This repair applies to the entire Office suite, even if the issue only affects PowerPoint.
    1. After completing the repair, restart the computer and test PowerPoint again.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Repair Office from Windows
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
      • Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
      • Right-click it, select Change, then choose Repair.
      • If available, use Online Repair because it is more thorough.
    2. Start PowerPoint in Safe Mode to check add-ins
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Type powerpnt /safe and start PowerPoint.
      • If PowerPoint opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
      • Select COM Add-ins > Go.
      • Clear all add-in checkboxes, select OK, then restart PowerPoint normally.
      • If that fixes it, re-enable add-ins one at a time to find the one causing the problem.
    3. Install the latest Office updates
      • Open any Office app that still works.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.
    4. If the problem happens only when opening PowerPoint files by clicking them
      • Repair the Office file association:
        • Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
        • Select the Office product and choose Change.
        • Run Quick Repair.
      • If needed, manually set .ppt and .pptx files to open with PowerPoint in Default Programs.
    5. If one specific presentation fails
      • In PowerPoint, use File > Open > Browse.
      • Select the file, click the arrow next to Open, then choose Open and Repair.
      • If the file is very old, it may be a PowerPoint 95 file, which newer versions cannot open directly.
    6. If PowerPoint still hangs or crashes
      • Check whether PowerPoint is busy with another process by looking at the status bar.
      • Make sure antivirus software is up to date.
