I can’t save an Excel file, keep getting the dreaded Saving spinning wheel.

I tried to copy a small section of a file to a new window/file. By doing that action I created some type of a loop in the background that is now preventing me from saving the file. The affected Excel workbook is stored in OneDrive. It opens, edits, and saves successfully using Excel for the web through OneDrive.com. Those saved changes are correctly reflected on the iPad. Other Excel files in the same OneDrive account also edit and save normally. However, this particular workbook cannot save changes when edited using the Excel app on the iPad or using the OneDrive app.. The save/cloud icon continues spinning. The issue occurs with both AutoSave enabled and disabled. Signing out and back in, restarting the iPad, testing offline, deleting and reinstalling the Excel app, and confirming that both Excel and OneDrive apps are updated did not resolve the issue. HELP PLEASE!

Because the workbook saves correctly in Excel for the web and on iPad only this one file keeps spinning in the Excel/OneDrive apps, the most supported causes are a file-specific save interruption, a temporary file/lock issue, or a OneDrive local sync handling problem rather than a general account problem.

Try this end-to-end recovery path:

  1. In Excel for the web, create a clean copy of the workbook to local storage.
    • Select File > Create a Copy > Download a Copy.
    • If prompted, select Save.
  2. Open the downloaded workbook in Excel.
    • If it opens in Protected View, select Enable Editing.
    • Then select File > Save a Copy > Browse and save it with a new name.
  3. Put the newly saved copy back into OneDrive and test that copy in Excel on iPad.
    • This helps if the original workbook has a corrupted save state or lock metadata tied to that specific file.
  4. Make sure Office is fully updated.
    • Open an Office app and choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    • A known OneDrive Files On-Demand save issue was fixed by installing the latest Office updates.
  5. If the original file still hangs, continue working from the new copy instead of the original.
    • Excel saves by creating a temporary file, deleting the original, and renaming the temporary file. If that process is interrupted, one workbook can get stuck even while other files save normally.

Why this fits the symptoms:

  • The problem is isolated to one workbook, while other files in the same OneDrive account save normally.
  • The workbook can still be edited and saved in Excel for the web, which points away from a broad permission or account issue.
  • Excel save failures can happen when the save process is interrupted while creating, deleting, or renaming the temporary file.

If a rename/save of the downloaded copy fails, also check these file conditions:

  • The destination must have enough free space.
  • The full path and file name must stay under 218 characters.
  • The save location must allow Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions.
