A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Copy Link is grey for a simple reason in many cases. Word can only make a sharing link for a file that is already saved in OneDrive or SharePoint. A file that lives only on your PC does not have a link yet.
First, check where the file is saved. Look at the top of Word. If the file is on This PC or on your Desktop only, save a copy to OneDrive. Select File. Select Save As. Select OneDrive. Select the folder you want. Select Save.
Wait for the file to finish uploading. Click the OneDrive icon near the clock. If it says syncing, wait until it says up to date. Then try Copy Link again.
Try the OneDrive website if Word still shows grey. Go to onedrive.com and sign in with the same account you use in Word. Find your file. Right click the file. Select Share. Choose Can edit or Can view. Select Copy link.
Check who can open the link. If you need one person only, add that person by name. If you need anyone with the link, choose that option only if your work or school allows it.
Check your sign in. If Word is signed in with a different account than OneDrive, the file may not match. In Word, select File. Select Account. Check the account name. Use the same account in OneDrive.
If the link is still grey after these steps, then ask your admin if sharing is turned off. That is the last step, not the first step.
