What if I don't have a product key?

Do I have to buy one?

If so, why isn't there another way to activate Windows 11?

You can skip entering a product key during installation. Windows will install in an unactivated state, and you can still use it with only minor restrictions (for example, you'll see a watermark and can't personalize wallpaper or themes), but you'll be violating the licensing laws.

Activation requires a valid product key or a digital license linked to your Microsoft account or hardware via either of the following:

    • Digital license (no key needed): If you upgraded from Windows 10 or your PC came with Windows preinstalled, Windows 11 usually activates automatically once you connect to the internet.
    • Product key: Needed if you're installing Windows 11 fresh on new hardware or from scratch without a linked license.

Activation exists to verify that your copy of Windows is genuine and to prevent unlicensed installations. Without it, people could clone and reuse the OS freely.
