First verify that the exact ASUS ExpertBook model includes a backlit keyboard, because some ExpertBook configurations do not have the required backlight hardware.
1. Identify the full model number
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32and press Enter. - In System Information, note the value beside System Model. This should include more detail than “ExpertBook,” such as a B1, B3, B5, or B9 series and its suffix.
- Look up that exact model’s User Manual or Tech Specs in the ASUS Support Center.
ASUS states that keyboard-backlight support varies by model. If the manual and keyboard layout show no backlight control, the laptop may not contain a backlit keyboard, so Windows settings or drivers cannot enable one.^1^
2. Try the ASUS ExpertBook backlight controls
Look across the top function-key row for a key showing a keyboard with light rays—commonly F7 on ExpertBooks.
Try these in order:
- Press F7 several times to cycle through the brightness levels.
- If that does nothing, press Fn + F7 several times.
- Press Fn + Esc once to change Function-key lock mode, and then repeat F7 and Fn + F7.
- If there is no backlight symbol on F7, check F3/F4 and try the key by itself and with Fn.
ASUS documents F7 for most notebooks, F3/F4 on some models, and different controls on certain gaming models.^1^
3. If the exact model supports backlighting but the keys do nothing
Install available ASUS/Windows driver updates:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates and install any relevant ASUS, keyboard, firmware, or system-device updates.
- Restart the laptop and test the ASUS hotkey again.
Microsoft also supports updating a device through Device Manager → device name → Driver → Update Driver.^2^
If the model specification explicitly lists a backlit keyboard and it has never illuminated—even during startup—contact ASUS support for a hardware assessment. Provide the complete model number and serial number, but do not post the serial number publicly.
