Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Activation → Troubleshoot and, if offered, select Activate Windows → Activate; reinstalling the same Windows 10 Home edition on the same PC should normally reactivate from its existing digital license without using the old Windows 7 key.^1^
Activation steps
- Connect the PC to the internet.
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
- Note the exact error code and message shown there.
- Select Troubleshoot while signed in as an administrator.
- If the troubleshooter displays Activate Windows, select it, and then select Activate.^1^
- If prompted to sign in, use the Microsoft account previously associated with this PC’s Windows 10 digital license.
A digital license permits reinstallation of the same edition on the same device without entering a product key. During setup, I don’t have a product key is the correct choice; after installation, Windows should activate online.^2^
If ordinary activation fails
Check for an edition mismatch
Confirm that Settings → System → About → Windows specifications says Windows 10 Home, not Pro, Enterprise, or another edition.
If the troubleshooter finds a Windows 10 Home digital license but a different edition is installed, follow its instructions to install Home. Microsoft documents that a Home digital license cannot activate Pro and that reinstalling Home may be required.^1^
Since the current installation is already reported as Windows 10 Home, do not reinstall it again unless the Activation page or troubleshooter identifies an edition mismatch.
Try account-linked reactivation only if offered
An SSD replacement is not the motherboard-replacement example Microsoft gives for a significant hardware change. Nevertheless, if normal activation fails and the troubleshooter offers I changed hardware on this device recently:
- Select that option and choose Next.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the previous digital license.
- Select this PC from the device list.
- Check This is the device I’m using right now.
- Select Activate.^3^
This path depends on the license having been linked to that Microsoft account. A device-bound digital license can still activate online without account linkage when Windows recognizes the same hardware.
About the Windows 7 key
Do not rely on the original Windows 7 Home key to activate this fresh Windows 10 installation. Microsoft Q&A reports that activation of Windows 10/11 with Windows 7 or 8 keys was blocked in 2023.^4^
If the same motherboard is still installed, the existing Windows 10 digital license is the appropriate activation method—not entering the Windows 7 key.
If no digital license is found
If the troubleshooter cannot activate Windows:
- Record the exact error code from Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
- Use Microsoft’s error-code guidance for that specific code.^5^
- Contact Microsoft Support if the edition is Windows 10 Home, the motherboard was not replaced, and the troubleshooter still finds no license. Support may be able to locate a digital license associated with the Microsoft account.^6^
- If Microsoft confirms that no recoverable digital license exists, a new Windows license will be required.
Do not post the full product key or account details publicly.
