Do you already have a subscription? In that case, install in the same way that you installed on your previous (older) computer. If you purchased directly from Microsoft, go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and click the Install link next to your subscription product.

Install Microsoft 365 on the new computer by signing in with the Microsoft account linked to your home subscription, downloading the apps, and opening Word or Excel to activate them.

Install on the new Windows computer

    1. Go to Microsoft 365 Apps.
    2. Select Sign in and use the same Microsoft account that holds your Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.
    3. Select Install apps in the upper-right corner.
    4. If a menu appears, select Microsoft 365 apps, then Install. The 64-bit version is installed by default unless setup detects an existing 32-bit Office product.
    5. Open the downloaded OfficeSetup.exe file.
    6. At the User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
    7. Wait until setup displays “You’re all set! Office is installed now,” and then select Close.^1^

    Activate Microsoft 365

    1. Select Start, search for Word, and open it.
    2. Accept the license agreement if prompted.
    3. If asked to sign in, use the Microsoft account associated with the subscription.

Microsoft 365 should then activate automatically. If the Activation Wizard appears, complete its prompts.^1^

If you have a new product key or an included offer

    • Retail product key: It must first be redeemed and associated with a Microsoft account. After that, sign in with that account and follow the installation steps above.
    • Microsoft 365 included with the new PC: Open an Office app and sign in when prompted. For a digital purchase or offer, the license is added to that Microsoft account, allowing future reinstallation without a printed key.^2^

If installation or activation is unavailable

    • If Install apps is missing, check that you signed in with the account that owns the subscription.
    • If Office is already installed but shows an activation warning, open Word and go to File > Account. Sign out of any incorrect account, close all Office apps, reopen Word, and sign in with the subscription account.
    • Installing Microsoft 365 does not transfer personal documents. Use OneDrive or copy files separately if you also need documents from the old computer.
