Do not follow the Win+X → I → Ctrl+V → Enter instructions; they are not a normal part of Windows Update and could paste and execute an unknown command.
Ctrl+V pastes the current clipboard contents into a command window ^1^. A webpage or pop-up asking you to paste an unseen command should be treated as suspicious. Microsoft also warns that fake support messages may attempt to steal information, money, or install malware ^2^.
1. Close the suspicious prompt and scan Windows
If you did not press Enter, close the window without doing so.
If you already pressed Enter, do not repeat the process. Save open work, then run Microsoft Defender Offline:
- Open Start → Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Select Scan now.
The PC will restart and perform a deeper scan ^3^.
2. Repair Windows system files
Since the Windows Update troubleshooter completed without finding a problem, proceed to the built-in repair tools:
- Search for Command Prompt from Start.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands one at a time:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for DISM to report that the operation completed successfully before running SFC. Let SFC reach 100%, restart the computer, and then open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Microsoft documents DISM followed by SFC for repairing Windows components and system files ^4^.
3. If Windows Update still does not work
Back up important personal files first. Then clear the Windows Update download cache:
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
- Delete the contents of that folder.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC and check for updates again.
Microsoft lists this procedure for corrupted update-cache files ^5^.
4. Repair-reinstall Windows 11 if necessary
If updates still fail, check Settings → System → Recovery. If Fix problems using Windows Update appears:
- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Allow the repair version to download and install.
- Restart when prompted.
This reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings ^6^.
That option may be absent on a work- or school-managed PC, on Windows versions earlier than Windows 11’s 2022 annual update, or when the required February 2024 or later update is not installed. If it is missing, do not perform a clean installation yet; provide a screenshot of Settings → Windows Update and the output of winver so the appropriate repair method can be identified.
