A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Hi @WINSTON WONG ,
Thanks for your detailed information and sharing the workaround.
Currently, after researching the issue and reviewing the available documentation and resources, I have not found any official confirmation from Microsoft indicating that this is a known or confirmed issue.
The fact that adding a Cover Page and then undoing it causes the horizontal scroll bar to appear suggests Word is refreshing something in the document window, rather than the issue being caused by the "Show horizontal scroll bar" setting itself. Since older documents are unaffected and only newly created documents exhibit the problem, it may be related to the template, or profile Word uses when creating new files.
May I ask if you've already tried running an Online Repair of Microsoft 365? If not, it would be worth testing, as it can replace corrupted Office components that aren't corrected by Safe Mode.
You can do this by following these steps:
- Close all office apps completely.
- Go to Control Panel > Program > Programs and Features
- Right click on the Microsoft Office you've installed > Change.
- Select Quick Repair first (fast and doesn’t require internet).
- If the issue persists, run Online Repair (requires internet and takes longer).
Also, could you confirm whether the issue occurs when Word is started using Windows + R, then typing: winword /a? This starts Word without loading the normal template or custom settings and can help determine whether the behavior is related to Normal.dotm or a Word configuration issue.
For detailed instructions and additional troubleshooting steps for Word-related issues, please also refer to: How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word | Microsoft Support
Alternatively, I would recommend testing whether the behavior is tied to Normal.dotm:
- Close Word.
- Press Win + R and open:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates - Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old.
- Start Word and create a new blank document.
Word will automatically generate a fresh Normal.dotm template. If the horizontal scroll bar returns, the original template was likely corrupted or contained a setting that affected newly created documents.
For your reference: Change the Normal template (Normal.dotm ) | Microsoft Support
If the issue still occurs, I would suspect a Word rendering issue specific to the current Microsoft 365 build. In that case, please provide:
- Word version and build number (File > Account > About Word)
- Update channel (Current Channel, Monthly Enterprise Channel, etc.)
- Whether it occurs for all users or only specific profiles
I hope this information helps and I look forward to your update.
Kind Regards.
