Dear Microsoft Teams Support Team,

I am contacting you to request assistance with recovering two expired Microsoft Teams meeting recordings.

The recordings are from a meeting titled “Bestuursvergadering MYNX”, held on September 3, 2026. I personally started the recordings, and both recordings are still visible in the Teams meeting chat. However, they display the message “This recording has expired.”

These recordings are important to me, and I would greatly appreciate your help in determining whether they can still be recovered or restored from Microsoft’s systems.

Could you please check whether any recovery options are available for my account, even if the recordings have passed their expiration date?

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

    Hello Imke van Herk,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Community.

In most cases, you can recover an expired recording, as long as it has not been permanently deleted. According to Manage Teams recording policies for meetings and events - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn, Teams meeting recordings automatically expire, typically after 90 days unless the expiration is manually changed. When a recording reaches its expiration date, it is moved to either the OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin depending on where it was originally stored: OneDrive for standard meetings and SharePoint for channel meetings. Once expired, the file can still be recovered, but only within a 93‑day window before it is permanently deleted.

1/ Check the meeting organizer's OneDrive

For regular Teams meetings, recordings are saved in the organizer's OneDrive, even if someone else started the recording.

    • Ask the meeting organizer to open OneDrive > My files > Recordings and check whether the recordings are still available.

2/ Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin

    • If the recordings are missing, ask the organizer to open OneDrive > Recycle bin.
    • Locate the recordings, select them, and click Restore.

3/ Check SharePoint (for channel meetings)

If the meeting was held in a Teams channel, the recordings are stored in SharePoint.

    • Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to the relevant team and channel.
    • Select Shared or Files, then click Open in SharePoint.
    • Open Documents and check the channel's Recordings folder.
    • If the recordings are missing, open the SharePoint site's Recycle bin.
    • Select the recordings and click Restore.

If the recordings show “This recording has expired”, recovery depends on whether the files are still in the storage recycle bin.

    1. Check where the recordings were stored:
      • Non-channel meeting: the recording is in the meeting organizer’s OneDrive.
      • Channel meeting: the recording is in the channel’s SharePoint site.
    2. Check the recycle bin in that storage location:
      • In OneDrive, go to Recycle bin and look for the recording file.
      • If it was a channel meeting, check the SharePoint recycle bin for the channel site.
    3. Restore the file immediately if it is found.
      • Recovery is time sensitive.
      • Once recordings are purged from the recycle bin, they can’t be recovered.
    4. If the file is not in OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin, there is no supported recovery path from Teams.
      • Expired recordings are moved to the recycle bin where they were saved.
      • If they are no longer there, they have been deleted from that location.
    5. For future recordings, review the expiration policy:
      • By default, Teams meeting recordings and transcripts expire after 120 days in many business scenarios.
      • Admins can manage this in Teams admin center under Meetings > Meeting policies > Recording & transcription.
