    Welcome Faith Achieng,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand you are having difficulty typing at night because you cannot find how to turn on your laptop keyboard light.

Could you please let me know:

    • What is the brand and exact model of your laptop?
    • Did the keyboard backlight work previously, or have you never seen the keyboard light turn on?

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following:

1, Check whether Windows recognizes keyboard lighting controls.

    • Open Settings.
    • Go to Bluetooth & devices.
    • Check whether a Keyboard section with backlight controls is available.

    2, Install available Windows updates.

    • Open Settings.
    • Go to Windows Update.
    • Select Check for updates.
    • Install available updates and restart the laptop.

3, Check the laptop manufacturer's official app if one is already installed.

    • Open Start and search for the manufacturer's device-management application.
    • Check its keyboard or lighting settings for a backlight option.

4, If you have never seen the keyboard illuminate, please provide the exact laptop model. Some laptop configurations may not include backlit-keyboard hardware, so the model will help determine whether this feature is available.

Please let me know the laptop brand and model, and I can guide you further.

Most laptop keyboard lights are turned on with a manufacturer-specific function key, so press the key showing an illuminated-keyboard symbol—while holding Fn if necessary.

    Turn on the keyboard light

    1. Look across the F1–F12 keys for a keyboard-light symbol.
    2. Try the matching key by itself, then try Fn + that key.
    3. Common combinations include:
      • Fn + Spacebar
      • Fn + F4
      • Fn + F5
These combinations vary by laptop model.^1^
    4. Press the combination several times. It may cycle through off, low, medium, and high brightness.

For newer Microsoft Surface devices, F5 commonly cycles through the lighting levels; toggle the Fn key if F5 performs another function.^2^

If Windows 11 provides lighting controls

Open Start → Settings → Personalization → Dynamic Lighting.

    If the keyboard appears there:

    1. Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
    2. Select the keyboard card.
    3. Increase Brightness and choose an effect.

Only compatible LED devices appear on this page.^3^

On supported Surface models, automatic adjustment is available under Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Keyboard → Change keyboard brightness automatically when lighting changes.^4^

If no shortcut or setting works

The laptop might not include a backlit keyboard. To identify the exact model:

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Enter msinfo32 and press Enter.
    3. Note the System Manufacturer and System Model.
    4. Check that model’s specifications or manual for “backlit keyboard.”

A keyboard can still work normally even when the laptop model has no lighting hardware; Windows cannot add a backlight that is not physically installed.
