Sign in to Services & subscriptions with the Microsoft account that purchased Microsoft 365; the displayed status, expiration date, renewal option, and charge determine whether it is still valid and how much renewal costs.
Check status and price
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Microsoft 365.
- Locate the subscription under Subscriptions or Cancelled subscriptions.
- Check what is displayed:
- Expires on [date]: the subscription remains available until that date unless renewed.
- Expired: renew it to restore the subscription benefits.
- A recurring-billing symbol and next charge: this shows the next billing date and exact amount. [^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")
The renewal cost cannot be determined without viewing the account because it depends on the plan, billing provider, and available price.
Renew the subscription
If the page shows Renew, Manage, or an option to enable recurring billing:
- Select that option.
- Review the displayed plan and price.
- Add or update the payment method if requested.
- Complete the purchase.
- Confirm that a new expiration or recurring-billing date appears. Microsoft also supports renewal by redeeming a new 25-character product key at
microsoft365.com/setup. [^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
If the Microsoft account page has limited or no billing controls, the subscription may have been purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer. Renew it through that provider’s subscription settings instead; Microsoft cannot modify third-party billing. After renewal
Close all Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps, reopen them, and sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account if prompted. If activation still fails on Windows 10 or later, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter through the Get Help app. ^4^
If the subscription has already expired, files are retained, but desktop apps lose most editing functionality and OneDrive storage returns to the free allowance until renewal.
