- Yes. WER LocalDumps can capture a user-mode dump independently of the AeDebug postmortem debugger configuration. Local dump collection is configured and controlled independently of the rest of WER, and it can still be used even if WER is disabled or the user cancels WER reporting. Windows also checks the LocalDumps registry settings after an application crashes and before termination to decide whether to collect a local dump. Separately, if no earlier exception-handling condition applies, Windows can activate the debugger configured in AeDebug; if no postmortem debugger is registered, WER displays a message and can write a dump if the appropriate registry values are set.
- No supported AeDebug change is required to enable LocalDumps. LocalDumps uses
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumpsand can also use a per-application key such as...\LocalDumps\python.exe. AeDebug is the postmortem debugger mechanism under the AeDebug registry values and is separate from LocalDumps. Changing AeDebug affects postmortem/Just-In-Time debugger launch behavior, while LocalDumps settings control dump capture. A crash dump is not collected by setting automatic debugging for application crashes alone. - Recommended registry configuration for a future
python.exenative crash: Warning: registry changes require administrator privileges. Incorrect edits can affect crash handling and debugging behavior. Create this per-application key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\python.exeAdd these values:-
DumpFolder—REG_EXPAND_SZ- Path for dump storage.
- Default if not set:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps - If a custom path is used, the crashing process must have ACLs that allow writing to that folder.
-
DumpCount—REG_DWORD- Maximum number of dump files retained.
- Default:
10 - When exceeded, the oldest dump is replaced.
-
DumpType—REG_DWORD-
1= minidump -
2= full dump -
0= custom dump - Default:
1
-
-
CustomDumpFlags—REG_DWORD- Used only when
DumpTypeis0 - Default:
0x00000121
- Used only when
- Use a per-application
python.exeLocalDumps key rather than only global settings. - Set
DumpType=2if full process memory is required for native crash analysis. - Set
DumpCount=10unless a different retention target is needed. - Set
DumpFolderonly if a non-default location is required and writable by the crashing process.
-
- Permissions, privacy, and rollback:
- Administrator privileges are required to enable and configure LocalDumps.
- LocalDumps settings are supported under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, notHKEY_CURRENT_USER. - If a custom
DumpFolderis used, ensure the folder ACL permits the crashing process to write dumps. - For service crashes, dumps are written to service-profile locations depending on the service account if the default path is used.
- Full dumps can contain process memory, so they can include sensitive in-memory data. Store dumps in a restricted folder and share only as needed.
- Rollback is straightforward: remove the per-application
python.exekey underLocalDumps, or delete the specific values added there. If global LocalDumps values were added, remove those values from the globalLocalDumpskey.
About Visual Studio JIT behavior:
- AeDebug values determine the postmortem debugger. Example postmortem debugger registrations include
DebuggerandAuto = 1. - On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit AeDebug registrations are stored separately, including the WOW64 key for 32-bit applications.
- Keeping
vsjitdebugger.exein AeDebug preserves Visual Studio postmortem debugger registration behavior. LocalDumps does not require replacing it. - The provided documentation does not state that
AeDebug\Automust be present for LocalDumps to work.
A supported minimal configuration before any crash occurs is therefore:
- Leave existing AeDebug
Debuggerentries unchanged if Visual Studio JIT behavior should be preserved. - Create
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\python.exe. - Add
DumpTypeasREG_DWORD = 2for a full dump, or1for a minidump. - Add
DumpCountasREG_DWORD = 10. - Optionally add
DumpFolderasREG_EXPAND_SZif the default%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumpslocation is not suitable. - Reproduce the crash and verify that a dump is written to the configured folder.
